im in the process of rewireing my car and i wanted to know what wires i need to run for the gas setup is it just power to the lockoffs or is there more to it

ull just need ignition power for lockoffs i think?
i think you also have to run a safety relay of some sort, but cant remember exactly how its hooked up lol
id go check it out but my cars on a holiday at a workshop

i need this aswell, im putting a new motor in my wagon and i want the gas on it again but the wiering loom that was in it with the old gas motor is in the bin...

You can't just wire lock off's to ignition.
There are so many different ways to wire it, you need to give more details on you set up.

The 2 basic ways are firstly wire from coil +ve to relay then onto lockoff so only allows flow when the engine is running, the other is a vacuum lockoff setup, eg vf30, that only allows gas through when the engine is running.
Do not just apply ignition on power to the lockoff, unless you feel like building a bomb.

i was thinking of using the fuel pump relay

Just go to a gas shop and ask for a gas lockoff relay, it is easy to hook up.

whats so special about a gas lockoff relay?

i thought the lock off relays are the same as a fuel pump relay?
when my gas conversion was done im pretty sure they used my exsisting relay that was running my holley blues but just wired it differently?
might be wrong tho lol

25-09-07, 20:07 GMT+10#10 Dunno if it is majorly different from a normal relay. The ones I have actively worked on in the past (dual fuel carb) have hooked up using the coil signal to activate the relay and then the lockoff. Meaning no spark, no fuel, so if you stall it, fuel stops, if you crash it fuel stops etc...
In my current setup I am going to experiment with using the injector signal to activate the lockoffs, it may work it may not, can't see why it won't as the injectors refer to the dissy to know when to pulse....
Best bet is to ask a pro.

16-10-07, 08:59 GMT+10#11 you can legally wire it off the fuel pump wire. of what you guys are talking about, a lockoff relay. its a safety switch that has 4 connections, ignition power, negative coil, earth (usually the part of the switch that bolts to the car) and a wire that gives power to the lockoffs. it only gives power when there is spark. thats the legal ways to wire it up. dont bother with vaccume lockoffs, they're not reliable.
if it was me i'd just wire it off the fuel pump. probably somewhere under the right of left kickpanel.

29-11-07, 20:06 GMT+10#12 just slightly off topic. ppl suggest using the vf30 vacuum lock off valve with forced induction because it flows more than the electric ones.
does it still work the same when boost comes on ?
and stewart10, do you know what generally goes wrong with them when they fail ? or have you had any bad experience with them personally ?

29-11-07, 23:10 GMT+10#13 VFF 30's will flow much more than a electric lock off, BUT you will still have a electric lock off at the tank so you are restricted by that anyway.
I have been using the VFF30's for nearly 15 years now and have found no problems with them but I have seen plenty of electric lock offs fail. Thats just my experience any way.
The lock off relay you are talking about is called a saftey switch and it is basically the same as a fuel pump relay in that it is tachometrical. meaning it relies on a ignition signal to close the contacts of the relay and allow power to the circuit.
Remeber to always fuse your power supply for the gas system as close to where you pick up power as possible. I use 10amp fuse for the underbonnet and another 10amp for the lock off in the tank but mount the fuse in the engine bay. (its law)
Really you shouldn't be doing any fitting yourself (cause once again its law if you don't have a licence) but its none of my business, but you may find it hard to get a fitter to sign off on it once its done (if you need to)

i haven't got any wires going to my tank whatsoever. i had the tank tested at the start of the year and the tester didn't mention anything about it.
i'm not saying you're wrong, not at all. do they just fit onto the outlet line ?

01-12-07, 21:47 GMT+10#15 Obviously your tank was manufactured before 94. Thats when they started to fit permenant elec lock off's on the tanks. They do shut off supply when engine is not running. If you havent got one GREAT cause your tank will flow HEAPS more than a new tank so fitting a VFF30 will have a dramatic effect on flow. if you go on the impco website and look at their catalogue you will see the flow rates of the VFF30 compared to their electric lock off. They out flow by about 3 times I think.
