Hello again,
I recently bought and installed a 195kw memcal for my Auto VS Series 3 Ute. I have not noticed any benefits besides slightly better fuel consumption. When automatic choke is on, it definitely idles at 1100/1200 for a bit longer than usual. Maybe abit more noise and compression, and there is something that just doesn't feel right when changing from 2nd to 3rd, especially with the power button on. It seems to rev out for too long in 2nd, even when I am just cruising. (I generally put power button on up a hill) I am considering putting the old 179kw memcal back in.
A couple of years ago, I bought a 155kw memcal from same bloke on Ebay, for my VS V6 ute. That memcal did wonders for the car, but apparently included more than 10 updates which brought my car up to VS Series 3. The memcal I have just bought only has 1 or 2 updates.
Any info appreciated

hey mate, i have a ser1 vt ss and was looking at getting that chip as well however from what i have read because the VT and the VS s3 v8's use an airflow meter there isnt as much gains to be had with the HSV memcal upgrades.
The other thing is that the 195 engines had extractors and a different cam which is apparently where the majority of the 16kw came from. You would be better off putting the same HSV cam or next size up (still retain stock ECU) and fit some extractors. The stock memcal should have enough slack in it to adjust to the extractors and slightly bigger cam.
Information on the cam can be found at www.cranecams.com.au (http://www.cranecams.com.au) I think the 195 cam is a Crane 268 (compucam 2020) I was actually looking at the next one up from that (Crane 278).
Ive seen a cam, chip and throttle body upgrade on ebay for $1500, perhaps another option ??

Thanks Blackvl,
Always good to get some advice. I tried putting the original chip back in, but couldn't even open the box behind the kick panel. Theres two big plugs sticking out of it, couldn't figure out how to disconnect, and then I think I have to open the box. When you say there is an air flow meter resrtricting, any way around that?

I cant really help you out with openeing the ECU box up or anythign because I havent actually done it myself, however im sure there is instructions on the net somewhere, maybe www.streetcommodores.com (http://www.streetcommodores.com) ??
The airflow one is a bit of a funny one because pre S3 VS and VT they used MAF (ie no airflow meter) but in the latest incarnation of the "aussie V8" they decided to go back to using an airflow meter which i think some of the earlier injected V8's came with. Obviously holden decided it would make the engine more refined etc etc so i wouldnt neccessarily see it as a restriction ! I guess you could get an aftermarket ECU and scrap the AFM, similar to what we do with the VL's but i dont think its really that neccesary in the V8.
Im not quite sure what power levels your after and how wildy you want to modify your car but that cam, chip and throttle body package on ebay claims to give 175rwkw which isnt too bad for a daily driver !
Yella Terra also offer a bolt on +ve displacement supercharger kit for around $6000 (not fitted) and they claim you can bolt onto a standard engine and quote figures in the 220-230 rwkw range. Its really upto you on how wil you want to go !
My mate has a VP with a strocked V8 in it (355), big cam, extractors, bigger injectors, chip and is pushing out 225 rwkw, i think he spent about $4500-5000, so really there is a few options! Personally i prefer the bolt on stuff because it can be easily taken off if you have to.
