is it better to have an amp rated to have more power than your system eg. 1000w sub, 200w 2 ways, 300 way 3 ways with a 1800w amp or is it better to have a smaller amp like a 1200w amp
thanks for any help
Pretty sure it's better to have an amp with more power than the speakers you are driving. If the the amp is too small, the signal to the speakers gets clipped so essentially they get fed a straight DC signal for a short period. This kills them pretty quick apparently.
Most people have serparate amps for there subs and speakers. I don't think i'd get just 1 amp to power all that stuff. Performance would be effected big time, i'd say.
I always use this formula. Max watts x .707. This get's you close to the true rms ( Real power your speakers will put out)
Then buy ur amps accordingly
alot of people might say im wrong
but i believe component splits for the front (2 way)
and 6x9's for the rear
even though you have a sub, the 6x9's sound alot beter up loud because they dont strugle as much with producing that minimal bass which elimates distortion
however you need very godo quality speakers, i have jl audio compition stuff
love em' to death
Get some 3 ways mate, that will do. The quality of your system comes down to your head unit and amps i reakon. I've got a banger pioneer 3x rca out head unit, pioneer 3 way 6x9's in the back, pioneers 6" in the front hooked up to a blaupunkt cross overs with 4" speaker in the dash that i pinched from one of those car racing games from time zone. Lol. Also got a 15'' us audio sub, Capactior, 1000watt Boss amp and 500 watt jaycar amp. Does the job, loud as.
are splits up front much better than components up front
also is mtx a good brand from what ive reaad they have good subs but what about speakers
are there any real good subs eg 'sledgehammer' mtx
Stay away from real cheap arse subs, look for a half decent named brand sub and you should be rite. If your paying $300+ for a sub that sounds about rite, but you can find decent subs for under that if you shop around. I put splits in in car because i got given the crossovers for free, if i did it all again i'd definately get splits, crossovers etc. Excellent sound. Shop around matey, look on this site or even ebay. A decent setup can be had for under $1000 if you shop round.
im looking at getting one of the dicount subs from strathfield, they have some for $150 marked down from $280 a kenwood one, i would brand name stuff for my speaker and amps probably from a store but possibly off ebay.
i'am thinking about getting one of no-name head units off ebay with a touch screen moniter, has any one got one, are they any good.
the only thing i was thinking was will this effect the quality of my sound because its a no-name head unit
A little bit of quality and features will be effected i'd say man. I'd stay pretty far away from ebay when it comes to touch screens, as a general rule if your paying less then say $600 for a touch screen it's either a real bargin or a real ****ty unit. But like i said before, you can pick up some great bargins on speakers/subs/amps/wiring etc on ebay. Cannot really go wrong with that stuff as long as you can hear it working before you buy it. Lol
I would recommend for that setup get a 1000 watt monoblock amp for the sub, and get a four chanel 500ish watt amp for the internals. Internals don't need a whole lot of power because you will be fading them to the higher frequencies anyway. All the blunt power will be coming from the sub.
you could even get away with smaller than that for the inside.
Those no name head units are not too bad for the money either. as long as you get one of the half decent ones they all have standard internals.
The amps in them are Rubbish. But if you're running external amps (ie. using the RCA outputs) the sound should be fine
Strathfield is okay if you know exactly what you want and just grab parts. But don't let them do your install. and don't take their advice kos the majority of those guy's don't know ****

1000watt mono amp...geez man that's a massive amount of money he's looking at there. lol. Your rite about the unit i spose, as long as he's got some decent rca's out on the head unit. Say 3 set's of RCA's out.
I reakon theres no need for that unless he's lookin for competition sound, or unless he's just spent $1000 on a sub. Seriously man, ive got a Boss 1000watt amp, cost me $200 (cheap arse amp, i know) running my internals and a jaycar 500watt amp running my usaudio sub. And that is loud as F***, unless your looking to break peoples windows or impress the whole neighbour hood with your stereo.
Yeh silverRB i see your point but I never go cheap on stereo gear. (sorta obcessive about music).
The Way i see it, there's no point buying a 1000watt sub if you power it with a wok-FU Brand ebay amp. may as well go cheap on the whole setup or not bother at all kos all you will hear is rattling...
If i was installing a setup like the one he described, That's how i would power it. and I have done-so many times with great results

what vl 88 wa said is prety much what i will end up getting a 1000w monoblock amp, 500w 4 channel and still thinking about the ebay head unit, the touch sreens just seem such a cool thing to me, just touch it and it does something and with the fold out screens they look so impressive
