Hi guys, I installed a T04 turbo in my stock rb30. Went great until the ring broke. I am in the process of rebuilding it. What is the bare minimum that I should replace? Not looking for a animal, just a quick get around car. Cheers.

well if all was good, id say mark al the bearings. pull it down, get a hone and some new rings, walla.

was the car a n/a and you bolted a turbo on ??

Yeah. stock and bolted a t04 turbo. Everything was normal, except it pulled really hard from 3000revs to 5000revs. I inserted the lamda meter and the AFR was fine i think, under 14.5

You want to be quite a bit under 14.5 - like closer to 12 if you are running a large turbo on a n/a block *plus* be good to have higher octane fuel, breaking a ring is a probably outcome of bad pinging...!

hone the bores, fit new rings, bearings and a thick steel head gasket and maybe oversize head studs

Thanks for the help guys. I have a few questions: 1. Is it a must to hone? 2. What is marking a bearing? 3. Many mechanics tell me different stuff. Do you think I need forged pistons and VLT injectors? I will be happy if the car runs in the 14s Thanks again guys, much appreciated.

For Q.3 , You can do a search on here has come up a few times in regards to the injectors, sorry ive forgotten the proper answer. No you don't need Forged pistons, but if the engine is in Pieces wouldn't it be better to do it properly Altho it will be more expensive, But you can always just put VLT pistons in there..

i was hoping to leave the old pistons in there. reason because i have rebuilt my motorbike a few times, and i though the pistons last for yonks are rarely wears. but im not an expert, so maybe you are right.

I think if you used the standard TO3 with a 3" mandrel exhaust, and run 8psi on a safe tune you should easily run a 14. Rob.

by marking the bearings i ment so when you re assemble it, they go back in the same position. other wise if the are slightly more worn then another bearing it wil create quicker engine wear.. pull it down and check the bores, if they have no scores or scratches and you only want a ceap fix then just wack some rings in and be done. but i dont recomend it.. if i were you id look in the trading post for a wrecking VL and pay $50 for another motor..

as above, buy another na motor and bolt it to it, get some turbo injectors and a fuel reg and a better fuel pump, i'm still running a totally standard engine with a GT35/40.82 and about 15psi standard everything unopen from factor!

mmmm, All these people running turbos on their stock n/a motors, I am getting enthusiastic about that spare paper weight in the back of my garage, I guess with 15psi boost poohkies you are running 98 octane ? edit: And maybe an IC ?

yeah he had a built VLT motor, that popped on him, and is just playing with the NA, where as i am going dedicated NA, and if i built a motor it would still be NA compresion as i am street driven only. i need all the help i can get..

Yeah I like the idea of the higher comp for street and country economy and careful use of the turbo now and then, plus I am looking at a multiple fuel controller hence my post re tunable ECU in the WA regional section, Also like the idea of running good extractors and putting turbo above rear axle then long return pipe on other side of car to act as IC back to engine bay, few guys in USA do that and run 10's !!

Im curious because im no expert, many say get low comp pistons to raise the boost. Would it defeat the purpose to do that? wouldnt you rather leave high comp and have lower boost?

The good old to lower comp or to keep high comp. Isnt it safer to run lower boost on a high comp, rather than to lower the comp on the motor wind a heap of boost into it to get the same effects and kill the turbo quicker. Sounds like a catch 22 to me. Any1 wanna shed some light here?
