Hi, I've just put an R33 box onto the back of my RB30 (VL turbo) and have currently got just the yoke sitting in the back of the gear box (until I get my tailshaft built) to stop the oil from coming out, and with the car running and I pull the clutch out with the gearbox in neutral it actually spins.
Is this right/usual or is there something up?
So should there be any drive through the gearbox at all in neutral. My thinking was that there shouldtn be any what so ever. But I thought maybe there could be as long as the tailshaft is all connected up from box to diff (which would provide some form of resistance to keep it from spinning at all)
Need to know asap... Cheers

Yep, Its normal for the box to transfer some drive in neutral when you have no resistance on the output shaft. Its just the thick oil in the gearbox causing the drive through neutral.

Grab it with your hand and it should stop. 87Calais is right, it's the oil.

Not sure if the original R33 yokes are the same, I got one of these from hardy spicer, about $98, and it uses the same uni joint as the MF5 and all VL uni's,
uni P/N RUJ 2030.

29-08-07, 16:19 GMT+10#10 I checked with 3 different places and they all said the turbo and n/a uni joints are the same...
So the hardy spicer unit fits straight onto the MF5 tailshaft with the n/a uni joint??

Yes the hardy spicer or VLT yoke is what you need, it will fit on your MF5 tailshaft or any VL tailshaft as they all use the same uni, P/N RUJ 2030

29-08-07, 18:40 GMT+10#12 so what do people use when they use the R33 yoke? they must grind/machine out the yoke ends on the tailshaft to accept a larger uni?

Going by the looks of them, they cut the old yoke end and reweld on the 33 one...
Its noticeably bigger...

30-08-07, 09:08 GMT+10#14 ah, you could be right there! it's probably cheaper just to buy the $98 hardy spicer thing than have the tailshaft rebalanced methinks.
good thread!

30-08-07, 19:43 GMT+10#15 What i did was use a n/a tailshaft, a new vlt uni joint and a hardispicer yoke for a vlt box. Its a good idea to do both unis and put a new centre bearing and get it balanced at the same time, not as expensive as you think
The R33 yoke cant be removed and refitted onto a vlt taishaft, its sealed and welded onto the tailshaft.
