Hello there i have a N/a automatic VL commo im looking at doing a full manual comversion. At my local wrekers they have a 5sp VL wagon. Ive sat inside and gone threw all the gears it seemed to slide threw them all fine except a little trouble into reverse. the guy at the wrekers said he drove it up the street and around the block and there were no rattles clunks or any noises pluss he said it did not slip out of any gears. just wondering does this sound like an ok BOX pluss what other things should i look for. thanks for your time Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

A wrecker could say whatever the hell it wanted. The whole reason the car is even at the wreckers could be because of the gearbox. By the way, I hope you plan on converting your wagon, as that tailshaft won't fit in a sedan.

yeah i know the tail shaft wont fit from a wagan into a sedan thats why i organised a tail shaft from a sedan.

If you're going to get it, it'd be worth rebuilding to be sure. You can't tell the condition of it unless you drive it or disassemble it.

How much would it cost to rebuild. or would it be woth getting it serviced and see how i go first. i watched the guy from the wrekers dive in it it sounded ok maybe i should just take it into a machanics and get them to have a look

Can you still drive the car? If so, that'd be a good way to see what condition its in. There is a member on here (HZUte) that sells quality rebuild kits very cheaply for MF5s and MX7s; the MF5 kit is $389.20. That includes everything to make it like new, gaskets etc. So it'll cost you that much if you or someone you know can do it (or cheaply), otherwise its going to be a bit more. Not sure how much a rebuild is worth, never had to fortunately.

LOL I had an MF5 in the boot of my R31 wreck that went to pick-a-part. I told the guy that most of the sinchros came out in the oil and it was ****ed... They still sold it.. and you can't tell anything from shifting when the car is not moving. If the box is still in the car, ask the guy if you can dump it's oil into a tray and see what it looks like. If he lets you then you got a pretty good idea of it's condition (gold chunks in the oil are BAD) LOL If he wont let you then it's probably ****ed anyway. If it's driveable, try downshifting into second at about 60. That's what usually dies first Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Biggest problem with the MF5's is the 2nd gear synchro, and also the others but not quite as much. If it crunches when engaging any gear then don't even consider it.
