I slapped up a turbo setup on my high comp motor for the time been and I had no timing gun so turned the dizzy till I felt the car idle better and drive better. The thing had so much power the thing would tear up the wheels through 1st, 2nd and a bit in 3rd (unbelievable power), then I took it past my mechanic, which he took it for drive and found out it was pinging! Now he fixed the timing to about 12 degrees and the thing lost half its power and idle drops when u let go of the accelerator. The boost has been on about 7-8 pounds the whole time and fuel 98 octane plus a bottle of octane boost. What should i do push the time back to about 25 degrees at least or boost it up?

You have the classic problem of power versus potential engine damage, though first sign of ping often means loss of engine power or the beginnings of it. I can run my VLT at 10psi on ULP (92 octane) and it runs fine, great economy, good get up and go and thats on 15 degress. 12 degree is a safe idea from your mechanic because he probably knows you better than i do edit PS: Octane boost is a waste for your safe conditions, send me your money instead and I will put it to better use Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Dont let it ping. Set up the timing on a dyno or at least with a set of chassis ears or even better both. Pinging WILL kill your engine. LOL and dont pretend its change rattling in the glove box.......

it tends to cut out and **** it self when it gets warm ...spark plugs? (they're new!) and also pinging-what actually happens....miss fire or cut out? ps i got the octane bottle for free lol, i have got any spare money to waste on anything.

i wouldnt run more than 15deg timing on a high comp motor i dont think it would last a week at 25deg.. best thing to do is chuck it on a dyno get them to muck around with the timing so it's safe increasing timing also raises idle rpm so you might need to adjust the idle screw on the back of the plenum now that it's set lower

you might have to drop in a thicker head gasket to decrease comp ratio, then maybe run more timing

Ah of course you have a high comp - then 12 deg makes more sense if you have standard ECU, can go up to normal 15deg if you get a tunable ECU and have means to detect its oin boost then retard for more power and less chance of engine damage etc... edit Type had 15psi when I meant 15 deg <guh>

You seem suprised? Im suprised it didnt pop the head gasket on your way to the mechanic mate, seriously! They dont take much rattling and that would have been rattlin! well the motor has been looked after really well with 150,000 on it and engine compression with all cylinders excalty the same on 171psi (purchased the car from some old folks). i was so surpised when i did the compression test that i did it a second time!
