yeh - tension on the belt man.... good luck prooving it though. let your mechanic explain it - he'll say it must have been faulty pump, the pump people will say the belt was too tight. just take it to him, and let him worry about it. oooohhhh. just realised he didn't touch the pump just the clutch n fan. belt too tight 4 sure - i was maybe thinkin he used a el-cheapo pump....?

Dont think its just tension by itself, given the pulley does wrap around the pump that much there is a tangent effect so even if there was really high tension it wouldnt make pump fail unless the pump bearings had seized or the pump casting had a flaw and that is getting more common as some casings come out of india and china Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I'm with Mike here, I dont see how just belt tension would destroy the housing of the pump. I mean the belt is the weak point, too much tension and it would have just snapped. I'm leaning towards a really poor Chinese casting (very common), and possibly as part of the cause a crap set of Chinese bearings as well.

Maby the over tightteeeness lol caused the bearing to collaps then seize and thanks to zinhoooo zingwad the casting was weak and smash. That way everyones right

If its a new pump then the mechanic who installed it would have to make a claim on his supplier if he sold it to you. So dont do anything to the pump, let mechanic know it broke from a suspect faulty casting and what could he do about it re a new pump... mmm, seems though that the pump was already there and mechanic didnt install it, in that case how long have you had it and where did yah get it ?

got the car from a car yard mate, i am the first owner in aust, and im pretty sure its the standed pump. iv had the car 3months but only drivn it for bout a month.

Ah ok, My guess is something has probably dropped onto the pump pulley or is has been in a front end prang, maybe not enough to cause other damage but it does stick out more than the other engine bits etc, Anyway so it got stressed or developed a crack, then the tension of a belt tightened up made it snap, you'll prob need a letter from the mechanic so you can then make a warranty claim on the car yard. There are bound to be heaps of technical people, even mechanical engineers, maybe even here, that can report those pumps wouldnt fail from belt tension...

hmmm donno if this has been answerd properly yet but being the water pump not saying this is wat happend it might have got a crack from the heat or somthing and just from a lil cracked with preassure from the belt just ripped it open like a can :s but beats me how it happend
