hey guys, just interested to know, are chopped springs actually illegal?or is it just the ride height that affects the legality?im keen to lower my car and am not concerned about the bouncing, pig rooting antics of chopped springs.what i am actually concerned about is whether my insurance company will give me the finger if the car has choppies, even if they know the car is lowered.thanks in advance guys.

Here we go again....tell me all the people that say theyre dangerous, why? Ive seen a pic of a King Spring on here recently that broke into 4 pieces when the shock collapsed? Safe?....and dont say oh, they can fall out if you hit a big bump...well guess what, so can any lowered or shortened spring, reason being is that they are shorter and arent under load if you get airborne...and if you drive like this, maybe a Landcruiser is more up your alley??? I cant see a quick cut with an angle grinder changing the integrity of the metal so much that it would present as dangerous. I can understand if you were doing it with an oxy and if you do it that way, youre a retard! I do believe that some springs should not be cut as they are waaaaaaay to bouncy due to them being soft and cushy from the factory. IMO FE2s work just fine when cut. Sue me.

most people who say they are dangerous have never had them before. I prefer it done properly but have had cars with choppies in the past and honestly couldn't tell the difference. King Springs are cheap **** anyway!

i have cuts in the rear of mine.. Lows just didnt hack it so i took half a coil off... people cutting 40% of a stock 20 year old spring and leaving the stock shocks in, thats were it is dangerous, not taking 1-2 coils off with short shocks.

Almost every car ive ever owned has had chopped springs and ive never ever had one fall out..I think the only exception to this is my Pulsar I have at the moment which the previous owner had installed Koni shocks and Whiteline springs/swaybar...im not encouraging it but dont have a problem with it.

Yer, anything illegal on the car will void insurance. a full set of lowerd springs is not very much at all.. look in the advert section of this site.. just get short shocks to match.

You would be soooooooo unlucky to get picked up for that by your insurer...years ago my mate lost his VR in a tunnel in the hills here, it was pissing down and he aquaplaned into the wall...he was an idiot and his tyres were down to canvas...when the assessor went to see the car at the crashie nothing was said about the tyres or lack of.....or the fact it was sitting on its ass....

Wyndup, i found your mate to be very lucky, normaly they would do anything to get out of paying..

Not if it fits within the specified guidelines it isnt. usually cant go much lower than 2" over stock.

They can't fall out if you drive around with shortend shocks, and if you dont got shortend shocks just remember they can fall out, dont go around corners like you used as fast as you could or fly over speed humps, Its dodgey but but if ppl are willing to do it you can't stop them

Depends on your idea of "choppies" if you cut a coil spring in half just about of course its sh*t....My current VLCT had this done when I got it by some kebab job and let me say the ride back from Melbourne to sydney was far from pleasant....... but if you say "remove" one coil or so to achieve desired ride height there is nothing wrong with that......as wyndup said cutting a spring with an angle grinder is not going to affect the metals integrity... you are cutting it right at the end of the coil anyhow it does not really bare any load there at all........ Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
