Hey guys Had a bit of a problem with my lifters the other day and while i was changing them over took a photo of the cam (stage one billet cam) to show the damage the lifter had done to it. Since have had ppl say the damage is probably not to bad but have also been told it doesnt look like an aftermarket cam so im after pics of other stage one billet cams and ppls opinions on mine. Heres the photo i took the other day appreciate any input Cheers Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

might just be a regrind? looks like a normal cam to me..

we specifically ordered a stage 1 billet cam so we wouldnt have to touch the head. so ur saying its just a reground standard one?

im not 100% as i havent seen a billet one before, but to me looks like a std cam(cast markings ect) and might have a diffrent profile ground onto it. where did u get it from? did the lifter housings get machined aswell?

dont remember the place exactally. lifter hosings didnt get machined, the thing with a billet cam is its supposed to just slot straight in and u dont need to machine anything for it to all work properly They cost a bit more to so if this isnt a billet cam i really want to know so i can get some money back off the guys who did it The general view atm is that it has the casting and doesnt appear to be aftermarket.

Definitely not a billet cam, that cam is cast from cast iron. You can see the roughness between the bearing journals and cam lobes left by the sand used to cast it. Looks like a factory cam to me. A billet cam is smooth and shiny all over where it has been machined all over out of a solid piece of steel bar stock.

just got off the phone to dad and he says that is the way they grind it, and it is a billet cam etc warpspeed: Is that coming from seeing an actual billet cam or going off what other billet constructed things are like? still a bit interesting seen as ive still had everyone say its not a billet cam aparently it is anyway Cheers Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

It is then turned on a lathe to create the round bearing journals, and the perfectly round cam lobes. Here is an example of a billet cam BLANK advertised on e-bay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/L-K-N...ayphotohosting (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/L-K-NEW-BILLET-CAM-BLANK-IMCA-CIRCLE-DRAG-RACE-RAT-ROD_W0QQitemZ300142198765QQihZ020QQcategoryZ33614QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting) Take a real close look at it. It is SMOOTH between all the bearings and journals where material has been turned away with a lathe. There is NO WAY a billet cam can have a rough SAND CAST finish between the lobes. As with any cam, cast, or billet, the final step is gtrinding the lobe shape on a cam grinding machine. If you still believe that is a billet cam, I can do you a good deal on buying the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Ah, FurryFrog, you beat me to it. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Doesnt look like its had a regrind from the pics, still looks like it has heaps on the bottom of the lobes, usually if they are reground they havent got as much material on the bottoms.

Thanks for the photos an everything guys, its a bit puzzling cause i see where you guys are coming from yet everything but the look of it seems to indicate it is a billet cam. Like i said nothing else has been machined, the car has more power so its not stock and have the grind specs lying around somewhere Maybe its just the way the place we got it from makes em, maybe the lobes are billet an the rest of it is coated in something, ****s me really but it doesnt feel standard Thanks for the input guys anyway, i continue to remain confused 88 Chaser: yeh thats one of the main things that leads me to believe its a billet, cause with the reground ones u need to machine the lifter blocks or watever u need to do and that wasnt done to mine Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

100% not billet, like everyone has said. The dont "coat" billet items, sorry to say m8 but it maybe a "stage 1" (only way to tell for sure is pulling cam out and sending to a cam shop to measure lift, duration etc) but definently a cast cam....

^^ What he said.... That cam is def not a billet cam, no ifs, no ands, no buts. If you paid for a billet cam you got screwed. That may well be a non standard spec camshaft but it is a cast iron cam. I can't say for sure if it is a reground std or not but THERE IS NO WAY IT IS A BILLET CAM. As someone else said, only way to tell what it is is to get it measured and checked by a professional to check the lift, duration, LSA, blah de blah.. Yiou get the idea... I would be getting quite p issed at who ever you paid for that cam shaft.... TEMPA EDIT - And mate that oil in the head looks awfully dirty......

how much did you pay for it? i would imagine a billet cam would be substantially dearer than a reground cast cam.
