Just wondering if anyone could give me some hints or suggestions on how to remove the pinion gear. cheers, John

In a diff? Take off the tailshaft, then undo the nut that is on the pinion. Take off the tailshaft flange, and push the pinion back into the diff. Should come straight out. Oh, and this means you must take out the axles and diff centre beforehand.

The car has to be on the ground with the centre and axles in to get the pinion nut undone. Then once thats undone you can remove the centre and axles to get the pinion gear out. Easier way of course is to use a rattle gun.

car doesnt need to be on the ground. Handbrakes are marvellous inventions. BUT the rest of what he said above is pretty right. Just make sure you mark the nut and housing so they go back in at the righ tensions

You're right there, VLHERO. But hopefully he would realise that!

I've made up a tool to use... its a long bar, with 2 bolts sitting through that sit in the bolt holes on the pinion yolk and there is a bit cut out of the bar for the socket to sit through and then you use that and a breaker bar against each other and with a bit of force it un-does... I can get a picture of it if ya want to show ya.
