hi, is it possible to put a performance turbo vl eprom in a std NON TURBO ECU ?? and use it on a turbo vl ? i have a perf .bin file for turbo vl, but dont have a turbo vl ecu at the moment to try it . , . will it work ? i know the turbo ecu has a knock board thanks, mark k

I've heard that it works but the knock sensor wont work.

will work fine, will just not have knock sensor function. its good however, without the knock board the timing will not reatard the 5deg like a turbo ecu will if the knock sensor is hooked up. also it will not flash a fault code for knock sensor. so it will be sweet Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

It may be possible that the knock sensor might still work. i've compared the VL/VLT ROMs and they both have the code for the knock sensor in there, but there are some other 'settings' which are different that might disable it thought. Didn't look into it in that much detail. Know for sure things such as reporting knock DTC are not there.

you into decoding Hitachi/Motorola assembler then darkhalf ? Got a diss-assembled listing perhaps ? Other than the knock sensor interface the ECU electronics is identical, just the firmware ie Maps/exceptions is different in the ROM. btw: Having a 5 deg retard at upper end of boost is actually useful for a bit more power but on balance it reduces economy unless you are at that level most of the time. ie. The time it takes to swing back to normal from 5deg retard on detonation isnt clear but I understand its several minutes so not good for cruise economy when all you want to do is one or two overtaking manouvers etc. edit: Some years ago I sketched up a wastegate actuator to retard the timing a few degrees by rotating the dizzy. Basically change the bolt on the dizzy to one with a bush and a couple of end stops, Rig up the actuator to work off bost about say 3 psi and move it through a simple lever the requisite 5 degress or so - therefore once off boost the timing goes immediately back to standard. Easier than adding a boost input to the current ECU, though if I can get a listing it might be possible as I used to write assembler code for motorola processors and I understand there are a couple of free input ports on the cpu used for the standard VLT ecu...
