Well ive just got my box back in the car after 2 days work and a month prior spent rebuilding this gearbox.
The gearbox is an MF5
Problem, changing down gears from 3rd to 2nd, 2nd to 1st, resulting in a really loud crunch (syncros)
But what im more worried about is the tinniy noise that is also present, the sound is like two milo tin lids being slapped past each other, it is louder in higher gears at lower speeds, you hardly hear it at all in 1st gear even at high revs.
Anyone with genuine experiance please comment, ive got a fair idea of what it might be but yeah i'd absolutly love any feedback you've got to say as i just want to know what ive done wrong as I havn't got anymore time to spend ****ing around with the damn thing.
Cheers, Matt

output or input shaft bearings Im guessing, Because you say it makes the noise in higher gears lower speeds, so More torque and vibrations are going through it and the harmonics are making it rattle around, Also I dont understand ya 100% have you rebuilt and now its making this noise ? or you want to rebuild it ?
Also if you have just put it back in your car, have you put the centre console and all the carpet that goes over it, that stuff hides alot of noise, and if it is a new rebuilt box it will be pretty tight and naturally make noises, dont forget alot of parts are moving around inside gearboxes, you would be stupid to think they wouldnt make some kind of noise
Anyway hope that helps you out

yeah sorry its a bit hard to explain, ill try making a recording of the noise in a few days.
The box has just been rebuilt by me, all new bearings syncos were in excelent condition and were not replaced in the build.
I understand that it should make some noise but the noise only really comes out after 50kmh and i can hardly hear it in 5th.
Im taking a guess its got something to do with the subgear on the layshaft. but i guess i wont really know untill i can pull the box out again.
All carpeting and sound deadening has been put back into place.

Can't help much but the milo tin lid sound sounds very much like a problem I had with my 5 speed VL a few years back. Turned out to just be the dust cover for the rear seal on the box had come loose and was rattling on the joint where the tailshaft meets the output shaft of the box, got under the car with a hammer and bashed it back in place, no more noise. Had me worried before I found it, sounded like something rattling around in the bellhousing, I was expecting lots of $$$$ to sort and was even more afraid of letting the wife (now ex) find out. As it was, the day before I found and fixed it I came home from work and she was out the front and heard it, at low speed you couldn't stop it making the noise, she was ready to kil me if it was going to cost anything, luckily it didn't. She made me sell the car too, if I'd known we weren't going to last I would have told her politely where to go and kept it. I miss that car.

Champion! i didn't even think of that, i remember it hitting the ground at one point when we were putting the box in so it could well be that! ill go check that now!
Cheers, Matt

I put up with the noise for nearly a week because I thought it was in the bellhousing, so I didn't bother looking. Ended up at a gearbox place, wasn't changing gears too well, asked the guy about the noise, he looked under and pointed it out, I felt like a d!ck, but relieved as it cost me nothing more than 10 mins of my time to refit.
Hope yours is quiet now.

ah well when its eventually sorted it'll be a huge difference compared to what its come from.
cheers, matt
