ey all I drive two cars so this isnt an urgent problem, but i would still like to get this fixed. Recently i have taken my vl turbo to my gf's dads house where it will be for a while so i can work on it and fix it up before i get the cash for a rebuild. it was sitting there for a couple weeks, i went back and started it up first time no problems. i then left it for three weeks and i went to try and start it and nothing happened. i turned the key, my electrics came on and for some reason so did my windscreen wipers. i then turned the key to start it up only for it to start making a loud ticking noise. i opened the bonnet and got someone to try start it so i could listen to where it was coming from. There was a loud ticking noise coming from the battery and from what it appeared the starter motor. Does it mean my starter motor has seized and jsut needs a smack to get it goin again or have i blown a fuse or possibly have some corroded leads somewhere or is it something else? My external fuel pump sounds like normal, my headlights and everything work, its jsut not cranking over. also i was looking at my rpm gague and it was going up to 1,000rpm when i was tryin to start it, and then goin back to zero when i was no longer tryin to start it. Thanks

Put a battery in it out of another car to make sure it just hasn't run a little flat, the lights and pump may still work but not have enough power to crank. A battery sitting for 3 weeks can loose power especially if its a bit old.

when it clicks = not enough juice from the battery.

Starter motor is grounded via block which is then grounded via large eyelet on engine mounting under inlet manifold, top right bolt of the 4 iirc. That might get some corrosion if coolant leak but, leaving battery for a few weeks will drain it as there is constant power drawn by the ECU and dash when the ignition is off *and* there might be some drain to your alternator field as well especially if the alternator regulator is old or damaged etc
