I drove around with one gauge for about 4 weeks, a fuel pressure one at that got some funny looks from the cops but no one stopped me. I think the general issue is - would they cause serious injury if someone slid over them when you hit them...! Making it smooth edge for airflow anyway would be a good idea, others might know the actual legislation. Minor changes to bodywork as far as I know are ok, do they need to be in the bodywork, these days you can get fuel pressure senders so you dont need to upset the bonnet line to have gauges there... You doing it purely for appearance or safety - ie Fuel pressure ?

Illegal Chrome cups are reflective and a distractions, any vehicles post 1976 cannot have chrome/reflective surface on the front of the car, eg windscreen surround, bumpers, wipers. So obviously a chrome cup will fall under that. ADR42 specifically prohibits internal or external protrusions which are not technically essential and that protrude from any part of the vehicle and is likely to increase the risk of bodily injury to any person. This includes bonnet emblems and pins. There is also another point. VSI 29 should help. Again it is unlikely that you will qualify for being able to have them. It is the field of view taken with a measurement from the seat at it's midway point, 760mm from the rearmost point of the seat cushion. Nothing can be in that field of view. Check out the vicroads website to tell you more of the rules but definately illegal.

the rule is that the cups have to be 1. mat black or the same colour as the car2 2. stand no more than 10cm tall 3. while sitting in your normal seating postion u have to be able to c the rd 11 metres infront of the car with out any distractions 4. all conections must be running through the bottom of the cup not out the rear (could cause bodely harm) 5. must be secured propery as to not come off whist driving in normal conditions if all these things are rite then the cops cant pin u for it(they will still hassle u though because they can)
