hi im doing a n/a turbo convertions and was wondering about the brakes! ive been told it would be best to up grade them! if i put vl turbo brakes or bigger on the front should i up grade the rear from drum??? or would they be right?
Turbo Booster and front and back disc's should be mininum. Braided lines would be better too as if you use the existing rubber lines they will be pretty sad and the braided will give a better pedal feel. CHEAPEST OPTION
Get disc brake rear end and Vt front kit they are cheap enough.
I am upgrading to bigger discs probably 343mm twin pistons on the front when I get bigger rims(18 inch min) but VT kits or the 330mm Group A Kits are supposedly good value for money too.
The options are yours go your hardest.
yea i think i might go standard back maybe vt front, turbo booster normally with a 1'inch master cylinder yes?
i would like to put the nissan 4 piston on for something diffrent im sure it wouldnt be to hard. maybe tryin to find them then fit them!
Nothing different about a Nissan 4-spot conversion mate, theres many people on here running that setup and a few with the RX7 4-spot conversion too (including myself). As a matter of fact VHR32 is currently selling RX7 calipers plus his famous conversion kit for only $500. Fitting is easy, I put mine on in a lunch hour!
but yeah the rx7 brakes are as good as you will need, although hsv brakes do look sexy as and would stop a concrete elephant although maybe a lil to farfetch'd price wise
just get a brand new set of good brake pads, and brand new vl discs that have been slotted. pretty cheap if you ask me, and you dont really need the vt brakes if your just converting.
well the vt kits are cheap by the looks of it. and these heaps of second hand calipers on the net so i might just go for them! if i can get some nissan calipers i would go that way. they all take the same size disk yer???
and yes HSV are nice but are to dear for me

Hardly worth spending the money. Good pads and slotted rotors will be an improvement yes, but a hardly noticeable one at that. Do things properly the first time I say.

No they don't all take the same size rotor. They take whatever size rotor that the adaptor brackets are made to suit.

You say a lot but most of it is crap!
Depends what extremes you want to go to and how much you want to spend
We can all go out and spend huge bucks on massive brakes but at the end of the day if you don't need them why would you.
buy the best you can on your budget.

Yeah I agree, but if he's considering VT or 4-pot conversion then I reckon he can afford more than a simple pad and rotor upgrade. The amount of people that have done minor brake "upgrades" only to be disappointed and do a proper conversion later on speaks for itself.
As for not needing them, well its kinda like seatbelts mate. 99% of the time you don't need them, but f*ck me you appreciate them when ya do!
hero - your wrong man. it is a difference, and is perfect for his setup. its not like he is chasing big numbers and needs big ass brakes. these are perfect for the application.
currently my boss and i had a whole week on brakes and the sorts, i learned alot (im mechanic apprentice).
so i have ordered myself some slotted dba discs all around and new bendex pads all around. cost $200 the lot and im sure it will performe good, and enough for what is needed.
kenworth - well said champ.

Big brakes are only to back up big numbers mate. There is a safety aspect and also a driveability aspect too. You spent a whole week on brakes!? Wow good for you man! Now get out there and experiment with what a good brake setup actually feels like in comparison to inadequate stock VL brakes. I have also learnt alot about brakes, 90% of which has been by what Im feeling through the pedal, and how I experience their relative performance.
I guess I'm wasting my time trying to explain the benefits of a proper brake setup over a lame attempt to save the pathetic stock arrangement. Don't be surprised when your "upgrade" doesn't crack up to be all you expected it to be. Hell, my 4-pot setup doesn't even feel over the top. It feels like it should have been that way from factory!
hero, 99.9percent of the **** you talk on this website is pure crap.
hell if money isnt an issue i would get some kick ass top of the line brembos for my car, but thats obviously not the case.
im just giving an option as to work with the stock brakes and a good money saving option.
you going for big power, then yes go bigger brakes, if not then im sure some new slotted brakes with good pads will do the trick.

Actually I don't really talk that much crap, I used to yes but not much lately. People just refuse to take my advice seriously these days regardless of whether its good or not. Remember that pretty much the only thing on my car that is completely untouched is the tailshaft, so I have learnt a fair bit while building it.
Slotted rotors with good pads will do the trick, just don't expect them to be anything hugely out of the ordinary. However, at the end of the day it doesn't really matter what brakes your getting or what you can afford. This thread is about azzaturbo who quite specifically stated that he either wants a VT or 4-pot conversion. Yes slotted rotors and good pads is a option, but anyone with enough money to do something better would be mad not to imo. Big power or not, big brakes will always reign surpreme over stock brakes regardless of the driving situation.
