hey fellas, how can you tell if a diff is lsd or not just by looking at it?
cheers

I'm no expert here, but I think an LSD will have a tag saying high performance, or specifying special lubricant....
Correct me if I'm wrong here guys

Not an accurate way of measuring whether its an LS diff.
Jack the rear up, turn a tyre - if the other one goes in the same direction then its an LSD (or a spool), but if its really really loose it wont. So the only real way is to check tags / take diff cover off.

Your single pegger isnt an LSD just cause you can get it sideways

well the quickest check to do is the above mentioned turning of the wheel. If they both go the same way its LSD. Sometimes you can tell with a spool though by rocking the wheel side to side a bit(turning left to rightin short spurts) a spool will have little to no play where as an LSD will have a minor bit of play unless its just been rebuilt. Best way to check though is to rip the cover off of it and look. Piece of piss to tell that way and I think you can buy oil for like $10 to replace it. But $10 worth spent if its a spool or just a shagged single pegger

also on vl's the diff plug should be a red colour if it is lsd and a single spinner is black but take note that these cars are pushing 20 years old and they might have been replaced

Ive ripped appart a few diffs in my time and Ive never seen it. They have always been black each and every time and these are on stock diffs never touched.

28-07-07, 15:51 GMT+10#13 no because it could be a spool as well. And hard to drive just a diff

No, stuffed single spinners will sometimes spin both too.
Best way is to take the cover off and look. LSD centres have an extra row of bolts, with Torx heads I think.

Were these diffs LSD? According to the Holden book, all LSD diffs from factory, including the V8's came with the brown/orange plug. I can also confirm my LSD diff plug is this colour, and it never has been touched from factory, apart from an oil change a couple of times.

im with you id think this would be the best way to tell
iv seen many single peggers spin both wheels here and there, and most of the time when they start spinning both they blow soon after.

Regardless of what they came with from the factory VL's are so old now that its common that small factory parts like diff plugs aren't the originals.

28-07-07, 19:21 GMT+10#18 jack it get one person on each wheel, 1 person holds other turns, spool obviously wont be able to turn, lsd will be hard but will be able to turn..

Easier way using that approach is to jack only one wheel and then try to turn it.

28-07-07, 19:40 GMT+10#20 I've spun my open centre via the tailshaft and both wheels spun the same way.
quickvl generally has the easier way, if its open centre the person spinning the wheel will be able to do so very easily, where if it were an lsd it would be hard to turn until the lsd reached its torque point and started to slip and turn, and then a spool just wouldnt trun at all (if the person holding the other wheel is holding on hard enough)
