hi guys I know this is a calaisturbo forum and i have a 4wd and all but i thought u seem to be the most switched on fourm around.. Car is a Nissan Patrol with the 4.2L straight six running 15psi and T4 turbo. Just woundering do i need a hose to go from a rocker cover to my PCV valve then into my intake manifold. Currently i'm running both rocker cover hoses into a Oil catch can since i got the new head. Before hand i had it pretty much factory had one hose into pcv valve then the valve went into the maifold and the other breather hose went to the catch can but like i said above i removed the PCV valve and ran both lines into a "T" piece then to a catch can remvoving the PCV valve all together and putting a bung into the manifold. What symptoms occur when removing the PCV valve as like i have? Thanks alot Rick. The reason i'm asking really is becuase over the weekend the car seems to blow blue smoke but not under load it seems just when i back off. Car had a new head with all new seals and guides and reground old valves about 1 month ago and has done about 400kms since. Someone said valve stem seal may have poped out and other said rings and so on ... Anyway thanks alot Rick.

If the 2 breathers are vented and PCV removed and hole blocked up with a bung you have it set up correctly. Does it smoke if sitting idle for a little while aswell as when you back off???

Started up cold warmed it up a bit and it started smoking a bit and got a bit worse but doesn't poor out just decent puffs of smoke on idle and quick revs.. Then brought the revs up to 2000rpm and held it there for 2mins and first 5 secs was a bit smokey then it cleared and didn't have one little bit of smoke after that at all for the rest of the 2mins.. Then brought it back to idle.. let it idle for say 20secs gave a few little revs and just played with the throttle a little and it started smoking once again.. Turned it off and repeated it all again to come to the same results. Took oil cap off on idle and no smoke comes out only like a light mist or something u can barely see. Took the breather off the catch can and no smoke from there either. I'll pull out all 6 plugs and see if i can find a oily one and then take turbo side before the cooler intercooler pipe off and look for oil. I hope it's not rings but i had a new head put on about a 1month ago and with new guides and seals and my old valves ... someone said the valve seal may or have poped out. any help would be great Thanks Rick.

Thats where I was heading with my previous post, exhaust seal in turbo... I remember I asked you what sort of turbo it was a while back coz it looked like an ebay jobby....If you drop the dump pipe off and shine a torch in the exhaust hsng the wheel and inside of the hsng will be wet with oil if the seal is leaking. Ive had one go on an SR and it was worse than yours sounds, even the inside of the exhaust tip was moist with oil.

do a leak down test to rule out the rings. plus you will get a good idea on engine health at the same time.

Well guys thanks for all ur input and i have been thinking all day what it could be as rings will cost me farking fourtune It got me thinking since i had the brand new head fitted it blew a bit of smoke when it was on the dyno on back off. So i thought i would check some things i done since.. And that's when i checked the return hose from the turbo and it was wet with oil becuase the hose is like a cloth type hose. So cut a long story short i took the oil return line off and oil came out the hose becuase i filled the car with too much oil when i filled it up when the new head went on. Here are a few pics of the return from the turbo and puddle of oil that came out the hose after the car has been sitting over night so really it should have nothing in it correct? When it blew a fark load of smoke was when 4wding and the car was on a steep hill and i guess all the oil in the sump most have blocked the hole which would have then pushed oil thru the turbo seal. Also a pick of were i had my oil level the big red lineso i think it was way to high. What are ur oppions? looks like you are on the money. the real problem is the fact the oil drain is lower then a factory turbo car that has them typically in the block(up higher), not sump. so its going to limit the amount of oil you can have in the sump. i understand the fact, most aftermarket fitments have them in the sump, because its easy to work with, but up higher will fix your problems without reducing the oil capacity in sump.

I hope i am on the money becuase if it is rings say good by to my decent bank balance at the moment I think i'll drain some out and fill untill it is just under the full mark on the stick and i hope that won't hurt anything being at that level Thanks alot Rick. You are on the money man, there should have been no oil in that return line after it sat overnight, oil being fed to the turbo is under pressure, the oil draining out through the return line is not, it needs a clear line to drain-if its passage is blocked because of excess oil (or like RB30POWER said, oil level is higher than the return) as is the case here, oil would have been pooling in the turbo core and eventually it pushes past the rear seal. That drain looks a little small aswell? Im betting if you can get your head under the exhaust hsng to look, it will be weepy (oil stained-probably burnt) where the hsng bolts to the core.

I'll take a look under the turbo tommorow and see if i can see any oil. I hope i have hit the nail on the head and found the problem.. I wounder what problems i have caused over the last few weeks when driving it around with that much oil in it ? It just seems werid it only blew smoke when turned off for 10mins started back up and idle and few small revs and would smoke.. but wouldnt smoke when u would hold a high constant rev? Anyway thanks for ya help and hope that's the prob Cheers Rick. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

cos of the extra axhaust flow, blows it out and you cant see it.. thats why i though it was turbo related cos usually slight leaks only blow smoke on idle and light revs.

Does it take a while to burn this oil off that has been left in there maybe? Cheers Rick. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
