hey i just bought a vn stroker i am new to v8's and was wondering if someone would be able to help me
the problem is that when the car is cold it starts fine but when it gets hot say after ive taken it for a run when i try to start it again it just winds over and over and eventually starts
i was told it was the starter motor so i changed it for a reduction geared one it made it a little better but it still does it. has anyone had this problem before? and what can i do about it? any information is much appreciated
cheers

sounds like a vn aero i had it was like trying to start a carby v8 on a cold morning then would spluter into life.never found out what was wrong thoe.did you get that vn from mr rx3?
Does the starter crank slower when its hot or does it crank the same speed and just not want to start???
sounds like a bad earth maybe if the starter is cranking slower..

yea same thing happened to mine and it was the starter motor, if u have already replaced that, check your wiring loom to see if its damaged or if you have a bad earth
same thing was happening to my 355,It was the solenoid getting to hot from the extractors,Rapped the solenoid with some exhaust heat rap, bob's your uncle,Fixed it stright away
once you have checked earths and stuff i suggest a compression test to make sure the previous owner hasnt thrashed the christ out of it. when its hot the ring clearances will be greater, therefore its harder to generate compression when hot. if its ok then look at the tune if blows a heap of black smoke out when you start it hot then it may be a bad tune or leaky injectors. also when you start it hot floor the accelerator to help purge hot air through manifold and comb chambers then let your foot off a bit as some EFI systems will not let the car start at 100% throttle
hope this helps!!
PS if the starter cranks over the motor the motor will go. replacing the starter to help it start when hot will do diddly squat the starter works or it doesnt.
well i have done the reduced gear one wrapped it in heat wrap and it starts but it still hard but when i had the stock one on i couldnt start it had to wait for it to cool and what earth should i be looking at?
Kenworth- it was really slow with the stock one but now its fast
Nasty1- yes thats the one. why???
Simo86- it does help if i do put foot to the floor to start it
it also wants to stall when its hot and the car loses some power????
im banking its your starter.my old ss had the same porblem.started fine cold but once i turned of at a servo when hot it wouldnt barely crank over unles i left it for at least 30 mins.heavin forbid i was lucky not to stall it at a set of trafic lights.
with the cranking problem the earth is critical if not already done, get a thick wire (battery cable) and attach it from the metal of the trans or an engine mount bolt that bolts to the block to the body. this will help yes, BUT when hot the air within the cylinders and manifold becomes hot alot of oxygen (req for correct combustion) dissapers due to heat soak emissions. this is when even on a stock motor the motor is hot and the fuel that hasnt burnt enough in the cylenders when the engine is turned off, the vapours bleed back through an open inlet valve and dissipates oxygen even oil vapours can do the same thing. therefore when you crank it there is no oxygen to burn and no flame to fire it up. by holding your foot flat, this will purge fresh air alot quicker than not flooring it ensuring a good start. it may not be perfect, as the heat soak emissions is only exaggerated by having a stinker as motor. i had the same problem with my v8 and this cured it.
this will work as long as the tune isnt dumping too much fuel into the engine under cranking to flood it.
as for the no power when hot depends on belive it or not partially comes down to the weather mostly. is it warm or hot over there at the moment? if its cold it may need a tune as the colder it is the denser the air becomes and the less fuel you need for a good burn. hense why turbos go nuts when it frosty out side!! when its hot more fuel is req as the air is thin. this is why LPG cars can play up when seasons change.
Hope this helps!

Hi Mate, As a couple of the boys said in previous posts I just hold my foot flat and wind over if its hot and having trouble starting... Seems to do the trick every time, Mind you its pretty rare it happens so if its common on yours could be worth taking it to a good V8 mechanic...
try a coolant temp sensor. about 20 bucks from holden. i had exactly the same problem on my vt 5 litre. the car thinks it is still cold when it is hot. so dumps too much fuel in. then floods etc. and will overfuel when loaded. and run crappy.they are the sensor in the water pump area. behind the heater hoses.

i was thinking the same if the previous above methods dont fix it seems the car is definately getting wrong signals off one of the sensors in closed loop mode.
The problem you have is heat soak, as said above, you need to wrap your starter soliniod with heat tape AND replave the starter cable that runs in the little steel tube on the rail beside the extractors, you need to upgrade the size and run it away from the exhaust
