hey all, we own a 3-3.5+ tonne boat and we are stuck because the old landcruiser is getting to old and slow. We do allot of gamefishing and need a car to tow from, melb to, nsw, and further places. Is there any car that you guys recomend will work well. so far.. - were looking at some 7.3 litre power stroke v8 turbo diesel f-250's (were waiting for the $$$ to drop - were also looking at some dodge rams. - dont know which motor. but what do u guys recomend. To buy one of these cars which will cost $40000 pluss or to put a 454 bigblock in the cruiser, aswell as a new gear box, diff, (basically a new driveline), because the stock one wont hold.. weve also thought about rebuilding the stock 4.5 litre petrol/gas motor and putting either a turbo or supercharger.. but the gearbox etc.. will need to be rebuilt to support it. ny help or experience will help.. thnx Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Hey man, my family is in the Boat Trailer trade, and I can say pretty much every customer that has rocked in to pick up a 'Breakaway Brake' equipped Boat Trailer has used the Ford F250 as the tow vehicle of choice, as you've already mentioned there anyway. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

ye, the f 250's are the go. our friend had 1 and we used it to tow the boat from melb to narooma. we got there quicker than what it takes to get there in our cruiser without the boat. thing is, before we had the standard trailer, it was a pissy piece of ****. And at portland we jack knived the boat the screwed it up real hard, and it was mostly because we didnt have the breakway break system, we had dangerous cable brakes. the new trailer will carry a ship and is being made custom by some of our friends. ill show u pics. thnx for the replies. the pissy trailer... and the new 1, still need allot more, shouldnt take too long, maybe 3 weeks, still needs galvinising, guards, some keel rollers, bit more. Dude its not that big... an SS ute would tow that fine

**** NO.... how much does an ss ute weigh? this weighs over 3.5 tonnnnne.. the boats nearly 8 meters long.. and wen we go fishing, we go BIG.. and whats worse.. when we go to portland/narooma/portstephens and get over 400 kilos of fish.. plus tackle and ****, weigh it up. i know what ur tryna say, but weve already looked at some cars... powers important, but its not just that, u need a stable vehicle, yesterday we went and saw a worked turbo/diesel landcruiser ute... this thing would fly and pull it easy, however, the suspension and setup was bad, and with these cars, they simply arnt designed for that. and also u cant trust how sometimes ppl/car dealers say it has a 3.5 tonne towing capacity or sumthing. our mate towed a smaller boat than ourse with a landrover/or similar, rated at 3.5 tonne with a v8 motor, and no ****, he front lifted of the car, with some suspension setup, it was fixed, but when they went on a fishing trip and drove around a little roundabout, slowly, the car flipped with the boat and all was destryoed. we also tryed our friends 383 landcruiser ute, this car flys and is estimated to run 13's, on the freeway its all good but swayys HEAPS.. but when u get to a little hill, bye bye..it just has no balls. and this car would have triple the balls that any ls1/ls2 would have. thnx for ur reply ny way. if anything the trailer looks over engineered and too heavy, perhaps creating the need you refer to?? some of the towing problems you also talk about are simple set-up ones to do with height difference between car and drawbar, relatively easily fixed and not the fault of the tow car. a properly set-up tow car and trailer will not sway or lift front wheels off the ground

Any of the Cruiser, Patrol, F Truck, Range Rover will tow that no worries. I used to use a '79 F truck to tow 3 large horses and all associated gear not a drama. Instead of going to the effort of putting a BB in the cruiser, put a good intercooled Turbo Diesel in it instead. Plan b could be to buy an earlier model F truck and put one of the 460 Diesels or a powerstroke in that, I'm pretty sure it has been done before and ford is in the habit of keeping most of their driveline parts reasonably interchangeable. The main thing with whatever option you end up deciding to take is this: A good load levelling hitch is your best friend when towing something that heavy.

This boats strong enough any way. They get 11sec 1/4mile out of these in the states. Or stick a B series in an effy. i would recomend the cummins either way tho as for gearboxs: TH700, tremec, or 10sp roadranger Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Just get a proper hayman reese towing hitch the ones with all the sway bars and what not, to evenly spread load over all four towing veichle wheels

Shit man your not towing a farken 40ft launch around. If your 23ft boat is making cars flip and lifting the front off the ground it's because the trailor isn't balanced. A 23ft boat on a properly balanced and braked trailor shouldn't need any supercharged turbo on a switch big block to tow it Any standard diesel Landcruiser will be more than adequate We drag a mates 23ft Hains Hunter round with a VY Senator. It goes up and down hills will 5 guys and gear no problem

It goes up and down hills will 5 guys and gear no problem ayy, well first of all, i didnt say it was MY boat that lifted the wheels of a car, it was a true story that we were told through a friends experience. Well i dnt know wether here in aus we have bigger hills or sumthing, but im telling u, when we go on a fishing trip, like narooms, nsw for e.g. on the way there from melb, we get hills like no tomorrow, and these hills are ****ing huge... how fast does she tow up hill? well in our case, u get a hill, u have the accelerator flat to the ground, and its doign 20-30 kays and slowly dropping.. well for now ill just wait till its finished and when we fix up an oil prob in the motor, we will take it for a spin and see how it goes. thnx for ur help NZ EVLHSV.. btw, how much does the hains roughly weigh, or can u give us some like specs, i just wanna know, dont see many boats on this forums, THNX man.. NZ EVLHSV- just a question man... do u ever go fishing for the bluefin tuna there in NZ, i heard theres like 400-600 kg tuna there easy.. i wanna go sumtime nd fish for em. thnx mate Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
