hi, i have a vl turbo and i want to drag race it, it made 360 hp and 420tq and has a std turbo and all the good gear in the engine, i am going to put a high mount big jobbie turbo on later when i have the coin.
the question i have is, i am only going to drag race it and i need to buy an auto for it. should i go a 4spd jatco or a glide? either box will have a brake and a big converter, and they seem to cost around the same to buy.
which is my best option?
thanks in advance. kcuf.
well ur not making much power.... so a "cheaper" keas would work wouldnt it :/
no point getting anything better unless ur gonna be making more in the future :/
but in all honesty... if u know ur gonna be making abit of power.. get a 2spd glide
they arent that "much" and theyre the sh(t

thanks fella's.
i want to run nines. there will be a big huffer there soon and it will make alot more grunt (i hope). the std turbo is restricting the power levels at the moment.
i only have a single cam head and i want to stick with it. do you reckon that this is acheveable??
bah.
get a glide.
and the SOHC setup can do 9's obviously!........ but if u wanna be fullysik get do a 26/30

not that its a big deal, but it has a bresciani grind cam too.

How often will you use the car on the street? If it's 9's you're after, im assuming not very often?
Oh, and oot uoy kcuf.

the bottom end of the car is good for 1000 horses and the single cam head is good for near 700 so the only thing lettin the engine down is the turbo and manifolds, down the track the engine will be gettin the maximum out of it so we dont want to do things twice... at the moment the car is not rego's but maybe later on rego might be an option... are keas the only builder of jatco for high performance use or are there other builders about who have strong box's??? it will be definately be in the 9's when upgraded...

There's a couple of guy's that specialise in this sort of thing in the advertisers section (6BOOST & duz360).

If 9's are your goal and its a 100% drag thing, or 95% even, then the glide will e stronger for the power levels your chasing and cost almost the same as the 3 speed jatco. While many guys can build a tough glide, KEAs prob has the best jatco's becuase of the amount of parts they have made for the things to beef them up. I'm sure a 3 speed jatco would happily run mid to high 9's, but would prob be a better proposition for a car you were going to drive on the street occasionally.
Make sure you match everything as a package, matching the camshaft, turbo package and intake manifold to your converter is critical to getting a nice resposive car that transbrakes easily and makes the power your after.
Cheers....................6BOOST
the car is owned by my brother, mitch (die05l), and he rang steve butchard (bms transmissions) today and steve gave him another alternative. mitch will fill you in later.
thanks again for the very helpful info.
tuurbo. the engine was built by baker precision engines, these blokes are spot on, it just needs a bigger turbo and some manifolds to get it boogying.
the box that i was told to look out for is out of a later model skyline around the r33 vintage i think, was told it will handle 1000hp with trans brake, it is the 2wd version of the box that was in rigoli's wrx that ran 8.20 with the 4wd box... i am thinking of this box because it is a little cheaper than the vl jatco and the glide...
the turbo is a high flow so its not exactly standard but 360hp and 430ft/lb torque is pretty good with that turbo and single cam head, the car is pretty fun on the street with the r33 5speed and spooled 3:45 diff...
kil351 your car is the silver vl yeah??? any chance i can have a look at your tub/chassis work next time we see you at the track? had a little look at easter but rain set in so didnt see too much... do you race any big meets or just bracket attacks and test and tunes???
