Ive done a few of these now at home with no special tools or equipment, figured i'd share what ive picked up and some pics of the various steps. What you will need!.... 1xGreen scourer (available from any local supermaket) 1xCan of Prepsol (Wax and Grease remover) 1xLarge can of black bumper primer (brand I used was Motospray) 1xLarge can of Powerplus Midnight black 1xSmall can of Silver of your choice (Platinum silver is fine) 1xSheet of 1200 Wet and Dry (or similar grit, coarser if you prefer) 1xRoll of good quality masking tape Assorted rags for wiping down etc, Tak cloth if youre fussy like me. Cutting compound (I used 3M Perfect-It) Finishing polish (I used Autoglym Super Resin) Silver paint texta (for CALAIS badge) The most impotant thing for starters is to find a Calais garnish with no major cracks in the plastic and the original striping sticker in good condition ie. not lifting massively at the edges and all lines still clearly visible.Even if the lines have faded and turned green that can be fixed in most cases! First things first, take one faded Calais Garnish.....remove the CALAIS badge and clean ithe Garnish thoroughly with warm soapy water, obviously allow it to dry. Take your Green Scourer and rub/scour everywhere but the sticker section (as this will damage/scratch it beyond repair)....remove the old painted silver stripes unless they are already perfect... Take your heavy cutting compound (i used 3M Perfect-It) and rag, polish the sticker section until its like new....the more times/effort you put in here the better the result and the 'greyer' those faded green lines will become, finish the polishing process with a few coats of something like Autoglym Super Resin, seems to work brilliantly on plastic! See pic- Next you need to repaint the 2 silver lines (ones each side of the sticker section) unless yours happen to be mint in which case skip this step..... Once youve allowed the Silver stripes time to dry (leave 24hrs if possible), remove all masking tape from the garnish and remask the garnish so's the silver lines and sticker section are now covered in preparation for priming the garnish (you can re-scour the garnish with your green scourer if you wish, wipe with Prepsol then Tak cloth prior to priming). Primed Garnish.... Once youve laid on 3 or 4 coats of your Black bumper primer, rub it back carefully with 1200 wet and dry or similar....wipe with prepsol and your Tak cloth and take out your Midnight black.....lay as many coats as you like allowing drying time between each, careful not to create pools/runs in the curves/castings of the Garnish- Once dry, remove masking tape from sticker section.... Once the paint is extra, extra dry, take a mild cutting compound to it followed by a finish polish like Autoglym Super resin or similar.... As for the badge, what I did was scoured what was left of the old silver paint off it, scrubbed it with a toothbrush in the gaps....headed to my local news agent, got me a medium tip silver paint texta, carefully applied two coats of it, try to apply it all in the same direction and as lightly as you can, definately two coats required (allow drying between each) then clear coat the badge with a pressure pack to seal it. And thats about it, its a few hours work spread over a day or two, nothing fancy required, im sure the pros will knock me for something but the results speak for themselves. Take your time between steps, make sure paint is sufficiently dry rather than rushing as you'll be fixing sh1t which is unnecessary..... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Thanks man, I think theres maybe $50-$60 in paint etc at the most....even if you buy an average garnish for $100....youre well and truly in front, I did Anthraniks, he sent me his Garnish from Vic. Lol.

Top work man, it's amazing how new those stripes come up with some polish and elbow grease! 1 Question... How do you remove the 'Calais' badge without damaging the sticker or the double sided tape that the badge is held on by, and also how do you re-apply it securely?

Antho, the calais badge I removed by sliding of all things a feeler gauge under it and levered it off a section at a time...even if you mark it a little, when you re-apply the badge it'll cover it again. If your badge doesnt have the original locating pins like mine didnt, get some double sided tape (remove the old stuff) apply it to the back of the badge, get a scalpel or sharp stanley knife or similar and cut out the holes where it needs it.

Nice work Daz! Ive found that if the garnish is only slightly scratched, meguires Plastix (used in small amounts, otherwise you'll take the paint off) works a treat to bring it back up to scratch, as well as polish the stripe section after some 2000 grit wet n dry. Also you can buy those graffiti type paint pens with a really fat tip to re-do both the silver lines and badge. The fat tip works great on the badge as you can paint it easily with just a couple of quick passes over it, same with the stripes and a quality chisel can be used to take the badge off while being able to retain the original double sided tape. The chisel is also handy to remove the stripes from an otherwise damaged garnish and re-apply to a freshly painted black one. Has anyone noticed there are two different types of calais garnish? The placement of the locating pins is different, and the colour that they fade to is different also, one goes more green (more common version) and the other fades to a more yellow colour. I've seen a couple of examples of this....weird.
