Hey,
Just wondering if anyone has used a Bosch MEC or HEC coil or similar in a VL/T?.
They pump out a mile more spark than the BIC coil from the VL.
Cheers,
Scott.
Quick vid to show the difference in the coils. The first part shows a HEC coil, the 2nd part is a VL (BIC) coil. The settings on the test rig were left identicle, just the coil was changed.

P.S. Please excuse the crappy music in the background.
Ive sent an e mail to ICE just recently asking a similar question, I will be looking to upgrade the coil. I was told that this would be sufficient but for more serious power they would reccomend a 7 amp module and booster.

Spoke to one of the Auto Elecs at work today, he said it will be safe to run the HEC coil so ill give it a try and see how she goes.

That VL coil looks like its on it last legs...Lol.
Excuse my ignorance but how do you know whats what? As in BIC and HEC?
I fitted a Bosch ED Falcon coil to mine, anyway of knowing?
70% sure that the ED Coil (pn 9 220 061 710) is a MEC coil, it was also fitted to the EA & EB. The one fitted to the EL (pn 9 220 061 726 also known as a MEC-726) can be used to replace the 710.
My 2c and to wait and see if SO proves me wrong.

I tested 3 VL coils, all off running engines, all gave the exact same result.
I would like to test a Brand new VL coil to see how much difference it made, but buggered if im buying one just to test it.
If you go to the Bosch Australia website you can download the Bosch catalouge, or the Bosch Motorsport catalouge. That will tell you whats what. They dont give out a lot of info but. I would still ike to know what the actual difference is between the HEC and MEC coils. looks like it may only be the resistance of the coils.
Bosch-

Bosch Motorsport-

I think the bosch motorsport catalouge shows the basic lineup, then all the other coils are based on these, with slight differences to meet different OEM specs.

I have a pic of one here.
Modify mounting bracket slightly (redrill holes) and need an injector style plug for the actual coil +/- connection. Easy done.

I have an IC&E coil and leads and i have found that it is easier to start (maybe my imagination) and that it is 100times more responsive to quick throttle flicks. Money well spent in my opinion.
Havent had time yet Mick, probably wont get around to it untill next weekend.
The Eleco's at work reckon it will be fine, their only concer is that he primary resistance of all these coils is around 0.4 Ohms and the Vl coil is about 1 Ohm. They think it may cook the power transistor. I have a few spares anyway so i think im going to get one and try it.
On another note, here is a copy of an email response i got from a tech rep at Bosch:

We would like to advise:
It is not possible to use either MEC or HEC coils on your VL as the drive
module is not designed to contol the increased current required.
I think ill give it a try and see how it goes.

The put out a heaps stronger spark. I had another VL coil on the tester today. got it throwing a heaps better spark than it was in that vid, but still nowhere near as strong as the other coils.
thats the same as i was thinking, because the dwell time is already programmed to suit the standard coil specs, it may be to long and cause the mec/hec coil to overheat or possibly toast the ignitor.
when those hec coils are used on typically fords with the tfi modules, they are current limited to 7amps by the module, to ensure maximum saturation and prevent burnout.
another factor is inductance, as this will effect rise times etc, just because the resistance is lower doesn't mean it will overload the system. thats something bosch doesn't go into detail about in their specs, its a heap more complicated then just primary and secondary resistance.
its strange you are having trouble anyway, with the s/hand vl coils i have used, had no trouble with over 200rwkw, standard gaps, and cheap leads, even flooded the cylinders heaps and it cleaned itself out with flood clear mode, never needed to clean plugs. for about 12 months i was driving around with a 10mm airgap under the coil high tension lead output to distributor and it never missed either (rubber boot was over the connector, but the lead was pulled out), just oneday i was messing around, pulled the coil lead off and the distributor had melted the end off under the boot, terminal was covered by melted plastic + 10mm airgap, still worked fine.
i really cant speak highly enough of how well the standard system works even though the spark always looks weak, and doesn't jump large air gaps.
the video is interesting however.
what you should do whilst your mucking around is throw a ballast resistor inline with the coil primary circuit (lowest value you can find, probably a 1ohm job) and just see what the spark output looks like then, out of curiosity.
How about these MSD blaster coils?

It's advertised for a VL as you can see, but I just wonder if it really does suit an RB30.
