I am currently waiting on my new Engine to be built and once that is slotted in and running I will be looking at doing a few upgrades.
First up will be fuel system (Pump and injectors) and ECU (Still to decide) and after that I am contemplating upgrading the Turbo. A 35/40 is too big for what I am after and I have been looking at the GT30 on the Garrett website.
Here's a few of my questions:
I know I will reguire a new manifold, what are some of the options available and does anyone have any experience with them? I'm not after workshop plugs just good opinions. In particular ease of fitament, any problems encountered and reliability.
Would there be any advantages or disadvantages with using a high mount manifold? I already have a custom plenum and for the visual aspect a High mount would look more presentable but on the other hand a low mount gives the sleeper look (Which is sort of destroyed by the plenum :eek Will there be power loss with one or the other?
Some info on the GT30 I have found:
* Ball bearing
* Oil & Water-cooled bearing system
* Upgrade turbocharger for GT3071R non-wastegated ball-bearing turbocharger; turbine housing flanges are outline interchangeable
* T3 turbine inlet flange
* Ideal for medium displacement engines making up to 525 hp
* Turbine housing kit options available
Horsepower 310 - 525
Displacement 2.0L - 3.0L
Part Number
* ^Trim
740902-1 - 1.06
740902-2 - 0.82
740902-3 - 0.63
711679-18 - 1.06
711679-19 - 0.82
711679-20 - 0.63
What's the advantage of the different Turbine housings? More lag, more power?
I don't have much experience with larger turbo's so feel free to correct me on anything I have said and any help is appreciated

1. Fitting, with the t3 flange it should bolt to the stock manifold with a spacer plate, obviously you are going to need to modify the exhaust manifold to have external wastegate provisions. As for which aftermarket manifold to go for if you do go that route, well it all depends on your budget really, an ebay manifold will do the trick but you run the risk of it needing refacing/machining due to poor quality, obviously if you've got the money, an extreme turbo manifolds or 6Boost manifold offer just as much value for money but alot more value for alot more money haha, i personally wouldn't bother with a Rajab/Bresciani manifold as they are no doubt proven, reliable, good looking and high flowing although i imagine they would have a price well beyond the justification of their design in comparison to other non workshop organizations. What you do get from a workshop manifold would be the kind of service only a workshop can offer.
2. Highmount or lowmount, it's an age old question and everyone has their own opinions, highmount manifolds are without a doubt visually more appealing and give you far, far more room to work with then it comes to cooler piping, turbo, oil water lines etc it's just a better choice maintenance wise.
3. Lag, the turbo you are depecting above will be very responsive, far more responsive than you really need in an automatic vl turbo with aftermarket plenum etc, even the 600hp .82 GT3040 gives almost instant boost response with the right setup, for an automatic vl turbo i would at very least be looking at the 600hp 3040 if not the 3540 .82, just remember the larger turbo you go, the less boost you need to run to make the power you want, and so the more reliable (theoretically) your car should be.
Hope some of this helps

Jack, that is exactly the info I am looking for. I will be doing the fitting (partly) myself, which is why I asked about how easy the manifolds are. I have had a quiick glance at both 6Boost and Extreme manifolds. I certainly wont be going with an El Cheapo ebay manifold.
The highmount lowmount debate is something I have been going over a few times. I'll probably go highmount but just keep all my gear for when I get defected.
As Nick has said my Car is running an MX7 si what bearing will this have on what you have said?
Pete, If you can handle a 35/40 I can EASILY handle it. Difference is I don't need a bigger Turbo to make up for anything
I'm not too concerned about 1/4 mile times, more concerned with how it performs on the street. GT30 looks like it will give me good response and enough power to keep me on my toes

charles you can get GT30's with T3 flanges.

Yeah that's fair enough Nick but I want an engine bay that looks better than Steve's
Before the new engine goes I need:
- Auto elec to clean up the wiring in the bay, re-locate fuse box to the glove box
- Engine bay smoothed and painted
I see 6Boost has a package for $3300

6boost "street bruiser" setup, Garrett GT30/40 600hp turbo, .82 rear, tial 44mm wastegate, 36mm diameter pipes, 350-400rwhp on 18-20psi, full boost 3000-3300rpm, $3300
Will that rear housing be the best for my application?

imo either the .82 or .63 will be fine. just remember bigpsi is running a small exh housing .6something from memory

Charles it sounds like you are building it up for the exact reason i am, i went with the .82 rear housing 30/40, trying to make 400rwhp with near instant boost response it can be done!
I honestly feel like anything less than a 500/550hp turbo would run out of puff to quickly up top, which is not the kind of feeling you want when you've just spent a serious amount of dough on a nice new roller bearing turbo.. go the 3040

Im sure he'll confirm.
haha of course it's me darren, i can still post in the regular section with the other peasants. Shine your shoes sir? haha
Oh and andy made that power but it wasn't on straight pump fuel... standard plenum though, that makes it impressive!

Sounds like we're on the same page with this Jack. Thanks for the feedback, keep me updated with how yours goes. Have you decided on an ECU yet? I'll be waiting until I consult with a workshop but I will be looking at a link.
To the people telling me to get a 35/40 (2 via PM) I don't want to make it so I can't drive it everyday. I could go a 35/40 but It's not the way I want to build the car

obviously the boost bug hasnt intoxicated you enough... yet!
35/40 all the way, even if you do use a smaller rear housing, i remember andy saying he kinda regrets going gt30 and wished he went 35/40 as stated earlier, you wont need as much boost to make the power with the 35/40

charlie
as above ppl have said , i made 391hp on 23pound with a smidge of toluene in my fuel , had full boost very very early and having a matching convertor/gbox , it was incredibly easy , and fun to drive.
on 20psi pump fuel i made just under 350hp
gt30 with .82 rear
do it , you wont look back
as for ppl talking about a .63 rear ,on the average gt it will be useless due to the p trim wheel , id hazard a geuss that bigpsi has a q trim wheel in his which is substantially different to the p.
during my latest build (now) i was going to get a t66 with a .63 rear q trim
i could have made massive power , pretty good response due to small housing , but wouldnt run out of puff due to larger wheel.
but lastly , all i can say is get a good gbox , my keas 3spd just transormed my car. best money i invested in it ever
