i have converted my vl to disc using rear disc setup from a vk v8
using the backing plates and calipers and i had to change the axle bearings to disc ones coz diff oil was leakin out the axle ends...
i did the conversion about a month or so ago....the rear wheels still have a bit of play but wern't leaking...
today i was drivin home from work and i noticed the right wheel was squeakin
pretty sure teh wheel has play and is makin the disc move making the brakes touch as it moves in and out of the axle and theres abit of diff oil on the inside of the wheels...
i was lookin for stuff on converting from drums to discs and i heard ppl mention of grinding a 3mm lip off the axle tube... just wondering if this is true...
gonna have a look at it tomorrow at work but just wonderin if anyone has a foto or something of this lip? or knows of any more info that would be usefull?
also i think my wheels stick out further since i did it coz now the edge of my tyres scrub on the lip with abit of wieght in the back... like a mate lol... will grinding off this lip help this problem too?
cheers boys

It depends on which backing plates your using. If the hole in the centre of the backing plate doesn't fit over the lip then the lip will need to be ground off. Pull an axle out and you'll see the lip on the outer face of the axle tube. It should fix your scrubbing problem too.

Did you change the seals when you did the bearings. You need disc brake seals which are a few mm thicker which gets rid of any end float in the axle. I found this prob when i changed mine over to disc brake. And yeah it is fractionally wider when you change it to disc brake.

yeh i did change them... i realised that after the axle ends pissed out diff oil all over the inside of the hot brakes... was a smokeshow out the back wheels after drivin down the highway lol not good but replaced the bearings and seals to disc ones and it didnt leak or squeak after that but just starrted a few days ago... i took the axles out today and had a look... all i could see was the backing plate may be a little bent but dunno if that would cause it...
if u want i can i get ur email and send u some fotos of the axle?

You can't flip the backing plate around because:
1. The calipers would be mounted at the rear of the rotors and would not line up with the rotors.
2. The handbrake assembly would be backwards and the shoes would obviously not be inside the drum.
3. The brake lines would not be held in place.
4. The handbrake cable would not be held in place.
5. The axles would not be able to be bolted in due to the backing plates being in the way.
Your problem lies with the lips on the ends of the axle tubes.

yeh i realised that today when i took em off... not the entire backing plate just the metal piece on the axle behind the bearing but it has a piece onthe other side and cant be spun a round

That "metal piece" you described on the axle is the outer bearing retainer.
This is a backing plate. My boot is in the pic for scale.
This is a disc brake housing without the lip, see how the end of the axle tube is flush with the axle flange? Have a look at this then at the ends of the axle tubes on your drum brake housing and you'll see what we mean by the lip where the axle tube protrudes through the axle flange.

26-04-07, 18:17 GMT+10#10 i think i have narrowed it down to the axle... im pretty sure that it must be bent...
but being that i am now after an axle...
does anyone have an axle for sale?

26-04-07, 18:25 GMT+10#11 I've got a pair of 25 spline axles with new disc brakes bearings and seals for sale. Just had any run out machined off them too so can be guaranteed they are straight
