Hey guys, went down to East Comm Wreckers today to see how much they are asking for twin spot calipers, and rotors off a vt would cost, and asked wether or not i'd need adapter shims for it. The guy there told me not to worry about shims, but thats not where theproblems lies!... he then went on to inform me that if my VS has abs ( which is does) then dont bother changing brakes, jsut get good pads, because if i can't get a big enough master cylinder then its not worth it, the pedal will just be spoungey! Now i was under the impression that i would need a vt master cylinder?!... can these go into the VS?... and/or is this guy talking threw his arse? im not a mechanic so i dont know! Thanks Eamon

The pedal will always be slightly spongey with VT calipers regardless of which master cylinder you use due to the calipers being prone to flexing. But either way I say he's got absolutely no idea what he's talking about. Twin spot calipers will always grip hander than single's whether you have ABS or not. And good pads are only as effective as the strength of the pistons pushing them.

Yeh well thats what i was thinking... i looked at pics of VS master cylinder/ break booster, and the thickness of that big round thing ( i dont know which is which lol) is doubled from the VS to the VT. VS looks to be about 1 inch, where as the VT looks to be around 2 - 2.5 inch's thick same diametre!, so i think i might source myself some rotors, calipers, extended abs lines, a vt brake booster/master cylinder, pop them in and see how we go! How does that sound?!

The big round thing is the booster, and whether you go for a single or dual diaphragm unit is purely based upon the characteristics you require. What are ABS lines? And why would they need to be extended?

:\ good question... this dude at ECW told me i need to get the abs lines extended or something! i dunno

Hey mate I just fitted Vt brakes to my VS calais. Got them from a wrecker in kilsyth for $45 each with hoses etc. You can also get VT discs to suit VS model so you wont need the shims (rings) approx $70 each. I haven't upgraded anything else and the pedal isn't very spongy and they work a treat.

The standard VS calipers even with ABS are rubbish. You'd be wasting your time changing the master cylinder and booster. I'm 95% sure the VS mc and bb are the same (or at least very similar) as used in the VT. I could be wrong but it's still not necessary to change them. I did the conversion on my VS and all you will need is VT-VY calipers, discs to suit, pads, and hoses. $350-$400 all up for everything brand new.

The VS master cylinder is either 15/16" or 1", whereas the VT is 1 1/4". Not sure about the boosters.

Some facts about VT upgrade brakes being fitted as it seems many people do have no idea and are giving misleading information. 1.VT rotors will fit VR VS but need spacers 2.DBA do the correct rotor for this job without spacers. 3.VB-VP need the hub adaptor with VT rotor 4.Longer conversion hoses are needed on all model commodores as the hose is located toward the front of the VT caliper and not at the side. The pre VP cars also have a different seat in the hose to seal the tube nuts. 5.VT master cylinders have a stepped bore of 1" and 1 1/4 the reason is the 1 1/4 bore will support the larger twin 42mm VT pistons. 6.VS master cylinders are a smaller version of this and the VS commodore with ABS brakes did seem to have a problem when fitting VT brakes but you can buy an adaptor for the VS plastic booster to adapt the VT master cylinder. 7.NOT all VT calipers will sit flush when mounting them to earlier commodres and care should be taken when they are bolted up so they do sit flush or you will have a very spongy pedal.
