Hi all,
I am looking into buying myself a new weekend plaything and most of the cars I am seeing advertised are fitted with Mini Spools.
Now I have been around long enough (hell I am officially Old School !!!) that I know what a Mini Spool is, how it works and what it does but I have never been lucky (unlucky??) enough to drive a car with one fitted.
I am reading all sorts of things about them. Some reckon they are great, some reckon they are deadly in the wet.
What do I expect driving a weekender on the road with one fitted? Are they manageable, would I be better off replacing it with an old fashioned LSD?
Most concerning, will I survive a trip along the freeway at 100 clicks in the wet or will I spear off into the trees and under growth?
I am most concerned about driving at normal road speeds (60 - 100 km/h) in the wet.
All input valued.
Thanks.

well, if you dont know how to drive a spool, u usaully get used to it quickly to control it but yes sumtimes if ur going 70-80 and u hit fullboost u can hang out a few lanes hahahah...
best thing in the world to learn how to control ur car, bit of a handfull in the wet untill u get used to it, the rule is simple, take it slow in the learnin curve and u will be rewarded later on with control neva could b possible !
I've had one in my daily for probably close to 6 months now I think. You get used to it real quick. I still drive normally through round-a-bouts and corners like normal in the wet.
You may experience a little understeer particularly if you have fairly average suspension set-up. Car parks, u-turns and tight corners are a pain in the ass and grab some attention with the shuttering of the tyres.
Highway driving is just like normal.
Normally those who rag out a spool have never driven one. Just go for it and find out for yourself
spools in many instances can be alot safer than a single pegger and lsd cause you know what it is going to do. i've got one in mine and yeah it does grab a bit of attention in shopping centres but apart from that they're fine for normal driving

Even wet road driving?
At normal residential speeds and highway speeds? ie what happens when you drive through a wet roundabout at 40ish k's and what happens on the Monash free way or even better on the ramp leading to the Bolte Bridge from the Westgate Freeway in the wet? Obviously this question is only for Melbourne residents...
Wet weather drving is what concerns me the most, having read all manner of stories. Obviously not everything you read is true of course.....
Thanks,

its still ok in the wet, i'd still prefer the spool over the single legger anyday. i've hit roundabouts at that speed and haven't had a drama. but if you are concerned just get a lsd centre from a vl-vs and slap it in.
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Car has a 9" fitted....
Guess I just have to drive it and see how it goes.
Thanks for the info,

you wont regret it, as these guys say, very normal to drive. Of corse if u got a bit of boost under the thing it will break out, but thats expected isnt it ? How fat is ur **** type of thing. If u dont like predictability, but the violence of a single spiinner..then well its a no brainer :P or go pussy lsd...hav it single on u ...lol
The major thing you will notice in the wet is that it will tend to oversteer alot easier when the power is put in.
A little bit or understeer from the front when tight cornering from the wheels pushing the car along.
The car isnt just automatically change on you and crash you into a wall just cause it has a spool. Your driving style will change a little, but should happen pretty quickly.
Besides, its a mini spool, if you don't like it. Take it out and put something else in!
i have to agree with the guys above.
i had never driven a vlt fitted with a mini spool till i brought mine.
you do learn very easy and it did take me by surprize a few times in the wet but, if your allready concerned about driving in the wet with a spool then im guessing you would be taking it easy anyway.
mini spools are only aggresive if you make them, if you drive normally then you will have no problems.
i dont really like the attention much as people just look at you as a "hoon" but you learn to live with it owning a vlt.
i wouldnt go back to an LSD after having a spool.

does ur car leave black marks from just turning in your drive way like mine did at ur house lol?

what about the factors of snapping axels n goin through tyres like undies n sh1t like that
Do u spool owners cop any problems like this or anything else cause of your spools?
im yet to break an axle. Obviously you will go through tyres quicker, mainly because your getting up it more (you dont have a spool unless you skid often).
But its not like you go through tyres every few weeks. But it depends on how you drive it, how often you drive it and how long ya skid for
i havnt had any problems with the spool or axles, but im yet to take the car down the strip and give it a real killing.
you do chew out tyres abit more but tyres these days are getting cheaper (for my 15's anyway).
the only real thing thats annoying is u-turns but you get used to it.
other than that mini spools are heaps better than an LSD or single pegger.

i change my undies like my tyres,, once a year
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
i have one and they are the best..i will never have anything else..after a month or so u are 100% used to it and just take it easy in the wet. mine only comes out on weekends (and soon wont even be that) but only problem apart from tyres ive had is drive shafts (obviously IRS). they will take their toll on components over time..have hered in earlier models ie: VH, VK, VL, of wheel studs snapping, u can get high tensile wheels studs, but is very rare to happen......
