dunno if this is right but mine had a similar problem, it would sorta keep running after u turned it OFF and would similarly backfire as well... ended up just needing the idle adjustment turned down

I had a very similar problem with mine, the solenoid attatched to the carby which is supposed to act as a "carby stop" was ****ed and wasnt closing or something, I unplugged it and never had any more problems Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

to think of this quickly an engine should not run with the ignition turned off. No ignition..no spark........ Unless theres something preventing the ignition from turning off. I dont see what difference the carby would make??

with carby engines they can sometimes run on if you have carbon buildup ontop of the pistons, once the ignition is cut the carbon is still glowing red hot, and fuel is still sucked in so it continues to run, my mates mini does this all the time, sometimes only way to stop it is to stall the engine

if the ignition is too far advanced or retarded etc it can keep running etc, i knew of a mates gemi once that he used to stall it to turn it off cos it would keep running with the ignintion off cos his timing was either advanced or retarded. my vl 5l used to crank a few times every now and then also after i had turned it off. I'm no professional mechanic etc but i would say a start would be to check your timing is right and check your air/fuel mixtures, possibly could be runing to rich. hope this helps, Chris...

First get your timing checked then run only a couple of degrees advance over stock, put some premium and injector cleaner in the tank and go for a blat on the expressway, should clean her out a bit.

i had the same problem in a gemini once. It turned out to be the shut off solenoid in the carby not working right

its called dieseling... running a little rich at idle and has a fair amount of timing... usually turning it off fast will fix it... if not get it leaned off a bit at idle... my vk used to do the same thing
