This is a guide on how to remove the stock steering wheel, some can be VERY hard, some can just fall off. This is for the very hard ones...
Tools needed:
Flat head screw driver
Harmonic balancer remover
2 long bolts to sute stock wheel
Pliers.
Step one:
For the stock wheel the first step is to remove the horn cover. to remove the cover just put your hands either side and pop it off. (watch out for the 4 springs on the other side.. they're a bitch)
You might like to take off the battery so you don't keep hitting the horn. once it is off you will see its connect to a black cable, just unplug it.
now you will see a black panel with like a H shaped peace of metal, that's the ground for the horn. In the photo ill highlight where to put a flat head driver to pop it off.
Now there is a big nut, That holds the steering wheel on. you can use pliers to get it off because it is hard to get a spanner or so in there, then replacing it only do it finger tight as it doesn't need to be tight and making it easier for removal in the future.
Now that thats all off you can try and yank on the wheel backwards (tip for this, put the nut back on a few threads so if it does come off you don't wack yourself in the head )
If that doesnt work, You will need to get your harmonic balancer and 2 bolts and install like this. also its better if you take the pointer off the balancer puller as it will just keep slipping off.
now just give it a few turns and it will pop off
then its off.. After that first, harder time it will be alot easier after that.
Thank you.
Matty.

haha true, one has the clock one has the RPM, strange. For the nut you could use a wheel brace instead of pliers, makes it a bit easier, but yeah good write up

Hey matty, do you reckon you could post a close, bright, front on pic of the guts in the column. There's something fishy about my horn for the 20th time and I need to see where your horn wire is and how it's connected. Much appreciated if you can!

the first fue pics are from my other thred and are of my car. The second ones were of my mates car as we were taking his wheel off...
Magnun i dont really get waht your trying to ask.. But there is 2 round holes each side of the center bit with tabs in them. thats what your horn connects onto...

don`t be a pussy hit the column with a hammer, or if your not as good as me lol get an extension bar put it on the end of the thread and whack it, it will break the seal, then put the nut back on a few threads then pull the ****.

i take these off heaps at work and what hes sayin about leaving the nut on a couple threads is tru, a friend almost knocked himself out reefing it off.
best way to get it off is to have the nut on a couple threads and then put your knees under the bottom of the steering wheel and use them to push the steeringwheel back toward you. then using a round peice of steel, smack the nut with a hammer. comes off easy as.
also do up your nuts tighter than finger tight, or after a while of driving it will work itself loose and your wheel will start moving in and out

i was telling people the real one.. not the dodgy way..
Like people trying to take harmonic balancers off with screw drivers..
Yer.. it might work for some but it ISNT the right way no matter how hard you try and tell people..
And i know the knee trick, mine come off easy as like that but the one i took off for the photos was no way in hell going to come off like that..
And yer, a pannel beater told me the fue threds on the nut trick :P

30-11-06, 16:02 GMT+10#11 You are calling "automatic cancel" then your indacators turn off?
if you installed a boss kit that wasnt MADE for VLs there is a fue things you need to snap off the "kit" or change the rear plate from your stock wheel.. so i have been told, i think its somthing to do with the orange plastic.
I dont have any here to show you. and i really dont know everything about doing it inorder to do it.
But your horn eirths out in the wheel itsself. Gets the positive from the little tab, you will get a bit of wire with 2 clips on it when you get your center horn cap, that connects onto the tab in the wheel center (there is 2, one each side) and to the horn. then push the button into the wheel and it will work.. if not then take the horn out and there will be a little steel tab on the back of the button, pull that out then put it back in, By pulling that out it will make contact with the wheel making it eirth.
here is a pic..
The key is on the thing you need to pull out a bit.
EDIT:
here is the wire..
and a pic that might help :S

23-01-07, 20:17 GMT+10#13 lol well the tools I normlly use include a 4 way wheel brace and then I put the nut back on a couple of threads and then your grab the steering wheel at 9 and 3 and pulling back rock side to side ! That is the full legit mechanic technique ! but seriously put the nut back on because if you get hit in the face with a nice wood wheel you can end up with a nice big black eye !

cos they are dodgey fuchs, the harmonic balancer way uses no effort and take 3 secs, no head bruising. you can actually get "steering wheel pullers" too.

24-01-07, 21:10 GMT+10#16 i do it like holdenv8, undo the nut...but leave it on a few turns, put your knees behind the steering wheel and pull out with your knees and hit the centre with a hammer and punch...or just a hammer...
doing it this way rather then just hitting it lessens the risk of colapsing your steering column its been known to happen.
your not going to hurt your head if u leave the nut on a few turns.
this is the easiest way if you dont have puller.

05-03-07, 22:40 GMT+10#19 seriously just go and buy a steering wheel puller, its cheaper than a harmonic balancer.
