Hey guys, i've got a VS calais 5lt. I wanna p*ss off the clutch fan and put thermos on it. Hate the 'fan growl' when revving out. Everyone on here raves about twin AU thermos on their VLs. What i was wondering was: 1. Will twin AU thermos fit in a VS? 2. Will they have enough cooling power for the 5lt? 3. Will i need to get a oil tranny cooler? 4. Where is the best (read: cheapest) place to get them from? 5. If AU will not be appropriate, what is the best way to go about with thermos for a VS 5lt?? Cheers, Ush

1. Yep 2. Yep 3. Not neccesarilly but if it was my car i would always have a decent auto trans cooler 4. u can buy em seconhand for round abouts $100-$200, new there is a few parts places that sell em , they are pretty common u wont be able to just bolt em on and they will work, u have to either get a thermofan controller or get a tuner to wire em in to the computer to tell em when to come on, i think there is another way of controlling em but i dont know that

i had them in my vq they work fine but i had them wired up easy to a switch so i turned them on manually which became a pain in the arse so in the end i put the clutch fan on. I did have to cut them up a lot and i did fit a trans cooler.

Modeo fans are a far better fit as they dont cover the entire rad like the au do.The fans are smaller but same design and cost a little more.Take your rad to a radiator place and get them to install a switch in the top tank,105 on 95 off should be fine. You wont need a external cooler for these as they arent as wide. Im using a vs v6 fan on mine as they fit with some brackets solderd on(not a 5ltr v8 though),if they dont work will be changing to the mondeos.

so what is generally better when comparing thermos to clutch fans?

you can run them at full speed whenever you want, they work better in traffic etc, clutch fans need revs to work better and thermos are more compact

electric is definately better if u set them up right.. clutch fans are just dumb, u dont need a fan runnning all the time especially when u start your car in the morning.

depends on application. Most street cars thermo for sure, burnt out car, nothing draws as much air as a fixed fan and cowling, but they are noisey draw heaps of hp etc. Took my vl out on saturday for brake test to get engineers certificate, was hot and the v6 fan went the whole time,so going to change to the mondeo setup.
