For Sale Viewed Cars = Stolen a Few Days Later

I had a mate of mine a few years back have his VL stolen a few days AFTER groups of people viewed it. I think users here on this forum could do a little bit more to protect their investment if selling. When I purchased my AERO, it was viewed at a workshop (also RAC checked there too). The seller would not give out his address at all. The car was picked up at that workshop as well with the exchange of funds and paperwork. Things you could also do when selling is; - get your car viewed BY APPOINTMENT at your mates house or someone elses property. It shouldn't be the case of 'yeah I'll come over some time tomorrow...' - you weed out alot of tyre kickers that way as well. - Note down their name/contact number/licence and registration - tell them that upfront on the phone - again that weeds out the idiots or might scare off potential thieves. Honest people wouldn't have any problems of you taking down the vehicle registration or even D/L number. I don't know how many times I've read on this forum 'yeah we had groups of people view the car over the past week..then the car was stolen the following week...', but you don't know who these people are to even give Police any leads? In short, your car is like your house - you wouldn't let strangers in your house would you? Just be bloody careful who you let suss out your car and its potential security weaknesses.

i had this problem with my blue/silver vh sle. people trying to steal of my front lawn. Jokers couldnt start it because she had a special starting method otherwise you might get it to fire once but that was about it. then i walk out the front to car doors slamming and a late model commodore leaving in a hurry. just be wary

Absolutely agree - at least ask them to show you their D/L ESPECIALLY if they are taking it for a 'test run' (who wouldn't ask that?!!). You can confirm the guy's / gal's name from there. If you explain to them that a 'mate' of yours had his VL stolen after it being put up for sale and you're being extra cautious, they should understand. BUT AT LEAST you would have the registration number of the vehicle they drive up in. I would get suspicious if they refuse to show you anything or don't roll up in a vehicle (in that case, no D/L number, no view car!). Remember, you have every right to ask for this as you are the one selling the car. Tell 'em to sod off otherwise. Someone else will buy your car.

Met them at a specified time at the shopping centre - Told them that 'I was busy but if they could make it to here they could view it and we'll take it from there...' No they didn't buy it....was bought later from a viewing at a mates house. I remember years ago, three guys rolled up at a mates on foot to view a Falcon, saying that they lived down the street etc etc - sounded suss and we told them the car was not available for viewing.

evilpet thats some good advice right there. back in 98' my old man went to sell his old british motor bike, it was just before X-mas a fair few ppl come to look at the bike. we went out on christmas eve at mid day. my dad said to me he had a bad feeling about leaving his bike there for some reason, anywho we come home 4 hours later to see our gate open our roller door smashed in and my old mans $16000 bike gone! according to whitness 2 guys on foot turnt up exactly 30 mins after we had left and they used boltcutters to get past the locked gate then hip and shoulder the roller door down and completely smashed it, then took the bike. we went to the cops and told em and the copper just said well thats wat u get for being a bikie!! yer so as evilpet said dont show ur object at ur home!!

Sorry to those people I'm sus on everyone. Exactly the same as me. I have sold many cars and car parts and not once have i ever met anyone at my house. Always meet them at a servo or maccas car park even if its out of your way. I had one guy ring up enquiring about cars for sale who asked for my address to view the car and when i told him i would meet him at a servo he asked why i wouldn't meet him at my house which i said it is obvious isnt it, then he hung up. Don't ever let anyone come to your house to view a car or parts especially in this day and age. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Well if you meet them at a 3rd party location (lol is that correct) you also need to be careful if they follow you home. And that goes for anytime. You always need to be on the look out and go round incircles a few times. If they are still on your tail after you have gone rounnd the same place 2 or 3 times then you should be suspecting the worst case scenario (i.e. they are following you) Oh and another thing. When you go to a 3rd party location (lol it still sounds strange) take a mate or two or 3. They can come with a car full of mates and steal your keys and take off. It has happened quite a bit. Probably best bet is to take it to a mates house.

Probably best bet is to take it to a mates house. I'm ALWAYS looking in my rear view o see whether I'm being followed. When I am driving at night I always do laps around the neighbourhood before heading home. As my last car was taken by force (theres another thread about that), I don't take any chances anymore and ALWAYS have key details of the car already written out on cards in case I have to contact the Police. The card has details of the vehicle (engine number / VIN / security-serial numbers of anything installed) and any distinguishing features and reference to a photobucket locaion where I have a few pics of the car. This helps very quickly get the details out there if your car is stolen (also helps you get a post on here ASAP). Theres a couple of other forums on the net you may want to take note of and send your details there as well. eg. Commodore Car Club WA, BrockCommodores.com (if its a HDT - but raise awareness anyway if not). It wouldn't take each of you guys more than 10-15 mins to do the same. Remember, if your car gets taken, you want to get the info out there as quickly as possible.
