Hey i don't really know all that much about the Holden v8's and I've always wondered what the major differences between the 185i 5L motor and the 215i 5.7L motor. Obviously there is a 750cc difference but does it really make that much difference in the amount of power easily achieved from the motors. Also what is each motor like to work with, and are both motors strokers or is that just the Gen III engine? I know these are dumb questions but i'd really like learn some more about these engines. Cheers, Matt

the 215 has a 5l with a stroker kit, same as takin your 5L to COME or similar and getting it stroked. http://pascale.customer.netspace.net.../gtsr-info.htm (http://pascale.customer.netspace.net.au/vs/gtsr-info.htm) edit: added link

Cheers, Matt Not dumb questions at all. The 215 is a 5 litre motor that has a stroker crank (achieving 5.7 litres), so its the same block as the 185. Differences are obviously crank, ECU, 215 has a knock sensor from memory, and some other tiny differences. The 215s absolutely hammer (a mates senator spun third in the dry with a carload quite easily!) GEN III is a totally different block and is not a stroker motor, its a 346ci standard stroke. Obviously someone will have a bit more knowledge than i can provide.

185i has 185kw 215i has 215kw I'd assume that working with the 215i will give you a significant head start with chasing ponies.

Unfortunately these cars are on the banned list of cars for us young drivers. The car needs to weigh another 75kg to meet standards, does anyone know if an exemption plate can be obtained if a lead weight is fixed to the car? Victoria

Go the 215... will save you heaps of money in the long run if you want to build a big HP motor... plus you get a 6sp manual rather than the weak 5sp in the 185s

Cheers, Matt Differences between 215 and 185 Harrop Crank 355 215 Stock crankk 304 185 A9L Rods 355 215 Rat House Rods 304 185 ACL Dished Pistosn 158 and 215 Cam Specs Cant tell exact difference sorry Computer 215 Detuned from factory Computer 185 Tuned Both Run knock sensors Heads Same 215 Bigger Injectors 185 Standard Injectors Both Run Hi flow top air boxes Both have factory extractors 355 Balanced and Blue printed at factory Oil Pumps Same Timing Chains Same Basically the big advantage of a stoka is that you have more inches to start wich means more torque and more hp.... If you do any mods in the cam reigon i would suggest that you have a little bit milled off your heads as these motors both run around the 8.0 to 1 compression ratio. And if you up the cam, well in my eyes and many others there isnt enough compression for the cam to do its job sucessfully.... Also HSV stroka's run a 3.45:1 ratio rather than the standard 3:08 ratio.. If you can find yourself a grange with a 355 in it BUY IT. there where only 10 made with stoka's and its basically a statesman with the full senator package ie twin piston calipers ect They are the S_#T!!! My VQ statesman has a VS GTS 355 Motor in it. Its basically stock at moment and peels 250 mtr power skid down street with a 3.08:1 Ratio.. and when it gets 3rd gear it just sucks in the ass and goes Hope It Helps

Thanks for the advise, after some brain storming it looks like i'll be saving for the 5L then placing focus on some invisible mods, you have to be sneaky down here. Now to add to my questions before i have some questions on stoking an engine (I've done alot of searching) to a 383. Firstly by using a POST vl block you avoid the issues of grinding into the water galleries when making clearance for the new internals? Will the stock exhaust and intake porting need to be oversized to allow for the increased air flow? Can the stock computer be rechiped to suit new injectors and a new fuel map, or is after market management required? Will an increase in compression to 10:1 be ideal to increase the performance of the engine? or will this remove the engines ability to run pump fuels? If so what is the highest compression ratio such a engine can run with pump fuels SAFELY? And finally will the standard cooling system be sufficient to deal with the extra heat produced by a stoker engine? THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!! I just want to remind people that I'm doing this to draw up a personal savings plan, as well as to increase my knowledge of these v8 engines.

VR block onwards is 355 clearanced. You can do your VL block but obviously got to be clearanced for the stroker crank. stock computer can be modified - good old delco 10:1 comp is perfect for pump fuel, any higher and itll ping. Cooling system should be sweet as pie! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
