Hey all, just wondering if some one that is a spray painter by trade or believes that their pretty good with the gun in the backyard would be able to do up a full tech article on spraying for the beginer as i have conducted searches and can only find bits and peices most of its someone dribbling s*** or arguing.
In particular i'm intrested in respraying my car from bare metal in acrylic, as the paint is absalutly shagged, has cracked right to the metal.
Now I don't want to start any arguments over acrylic being better then 2pac,
and I'm going to paint acrylic. But i would also ask if someone could do 2 seperate articles for the 2 paint types.
Like i said i'd like to go from bare metal, and i understand the basics. Strip, fill, prime, guide coat, top coat and clear which i'm sure most other beginers understand too. But We need to know when to sand, what to sand, what to sand with, etc. etc. and I'm sure it can be incorperated for people that will only rub back the shine and go from their for tidy up etc.
Also most of the other descussions seem to go on well if you haven't done it before then leave it to the professionals. We'll I don't want to do that and i get satisfaction on doing the work on the car myself. Also i'll give anything a go once, maybe even twice and my paint can't get any worse!
But also believe their is many other people that would also like a tech article as lots of other members are always asking questions about it.
So if anyone could help out I'm sure it would be muchly appreciated by myself and many others. And feel free to make any comments about what i've said, yes or no or add more.

its a vage area painting cars there is a lot of differnt ways to things and most come down to peoples personal opinions. im a spray painter and im actually respraying my na daily driver in acrylic tomorrow. if you would like i will take pictures and do and article on it as i go. ill say this now differnt people are likley to disagree with how i do things but it comes back to what i said earlier. are you going soild or metallic on yor car?
the thing that you will find the trickeist to do on the car is likley going to be yor gun technique but fortunatly with acrylic if you pack the paint on you will be able to buff it up to a shmick finish.
im not bare metalling my but ill write down basic steps involved with that too.

Thanks for the help and yes i understand that every one has their own way but i'm sure the basics are the same. I have the compresser and all, no gun yet, and i'm not after a show car finish just something neat. The paint thats on it is metallic which i'll be doing it the same colour which is 77L (2F017/2F021) Dark Red Metallic Paint - Exterior - Madeira (Wild Mulberry 1988) 1986, 1988 and being a calais its over #4F002 Super Light Opal Fire Paint 1988 Calais (with 60L or 77L exteriors). so if possible i'd also like to know how to go about respraying the bars

It doesn't need to go back to bare metal unless there is a previous poor paintjob that has orange peeled etc, even then just removing any trace of the bad paint will be enough. If your paint was OK just faded you just need to rub it back smooth so the new paint has something to grab onto. 2pack is illegal in your back yard because the 2 pack clear has arsenic in it, (but whos gonna know anyway? LOL nah man its acrylic aye).
Wet and dry sandpaper is your friend and start with a fine grain and work up to the finest grain. Sand once before undercoat then sand the undercoat silky smooth (a good tip is to spray a very small amount of colour onto the undercoat and sand until its gone).
When the undercoat is ready to paint it will feel very very smooth and will have an almost gloss look to it. Clean the surface with prepsol before applying colour and do not let your hands touch the surface again. Buy an average gun for undercoat and a decent gun for colour (acrylic thinners are good for cleaning the guns), always clean the guns.
The front of my car was sprayed by my mate in his shed using the method described above in PPG basecoat.
(naughty I know LOL) It turned out pretty well for a shed job tho my mate is a painter by trade and used a develbiss gun.
The first pic is before the clear was applied.

ucwepn2, thanks for the tips. I will be painting in acrylic anyway, and i'll have to go bare metal because a lot of it especially from about just below the windows to the top because its cracked all the way to the metal. if you zoom on the photo of the bonnet you'll see big chunks of paint missing, its just metal. I'm not after a show finish, just neat.

dude im a spray painter by trade and it would be a massive job to sit and do a tech post there are so many diffrent ways and so many problems to deal with that you dont know till they happen..... a really basic one would not be so hard but that will only be usefull to people who dont have dints, or rust or really stuffed paint..... and you will find that all painters fight lol not that we thing other painters are wrong... more that the way they were taught and products change so much we dont agree cheers
