Just doing a gasket change on my exhaust manifold and when I took it off last night all the nuts/studs seemed to be stupidly loose. How tight do they need to be to create a good seal?

tight enuf as to create a seal? lol jus nip em up at the end shud b sufficient. also make sure u use plenty of maniseal, thats prob the most important part of gettin a good seal.

When I put my extractors on, I was told that you should do them up tight, and I did. No probs yet.... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

You should replace all of the studs while your at it, that way next time they will not snap, dont forget how many times those studs have heated and cooled over there life, and as for tightening do them just lean on the socket firm, dont go bashin it down with a hammer and they will be sweet Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Is it normal to get some studs and some nuts when taking it off? 4 of the studs came out as the nuts were seized but the rest were fine and the nuts came off easy leaving the stud intact. Still ok to just wack them in and do them up again? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

i dont use studs, i just got bolts and washers, much better i just done it till it was like nipped up, then went over them all again, in sequence and yeah but, i NEVER overtighten anything Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Theres a sequence for this? I thought tightening sequences were only for things where the force was distributed over a large area.

You loosen from the inside out and tighten from the outside in im pretty sure. And yes its normal for some of the studs to come out instead of the nut coming off... Just tighten up the studs till they feel tight enough to you.

Tighten from the inside out, loosen from outside in.

Gday fella's The tightening sequence for exhaust manifolds etc is important as you want to lay the manifold or extractors etc out flat with the tightening sequence & you don't want to distort anything else to much along the way or break studs. Jordy has the right approach, start from the inside & work outward in a spiraling fashion & job done. Start by just firming them up first & then a bit more & then to the correct tension--do not tighten them in one hit. Tighten things up & then run the engine & then nip them up again, you'll find it's best to just run a spanner over them occasionally as the gasket will compress with age etc. Tensioning things correctly is very important & can save big issues further down the track.
