Just reading up on turbos' l8ly and wondering if the A/R of the inducers(intake side) is .64, does that mean that the air is compressed 2 64% of the initial intake volume? Transversely, on the exhaust side, if the A/R is 1.06, does that mean that, the air volume is increased as it leaves the outlet of the exhaust housing?
Is this all in relation 2 the diameter of the inlet and outlet sizes on the inducer/exducer sides of the turbos'?
How do u know what size is most suitable for a particular engine size?
No its a bit more complex, i'll hav a go at explaining.
If you were to measure the centre point of the compreesor outlet (2" hole) to the centre point of the compressor wheel you get the radius figure which is the "R". then divide the 2" area ("A") by the radius and you get your A/R figure. and you'll get the same A/R figure measured anywhere around the snail of the compressor cover.
Same apllies for the exhaust.
FOR EXAMPLE:
You cant say a .7 A/R comp cover on a gt35 is bigger than a .5 A/R on a GT42 cos its directly related to the wheel size.
So basically, it's just measuring the compressor/Turbine diameter, and dividing it by the inlet/ exhaust opening diameter? (The ones on each end, or the one out the sides, at the end of the snails?)
Sorry man, I'm a bit slow. And I'm not even from Canada.....
Errr, no.
Hopefully my crusty paint example will help........
A is the area of the outlet of the compressor/turbine (or any intermediate part of the outlet like A2 shown below).
R is the distance from the centre of the section area to the centre of the compressor/turbine shaft.
Regardless of where you measure the A/R, it will always come out to the same value for a given turbo.
Example:
A1 = 2.5" diameter, so area = 4.909" squared
R1 = 5.987"
Therefore A/R = 4.909/5.987 = 0.82
Generally a smaller A will increase turbine speed for a given exhaust gas flow, but this will be restrictive at higher flow rates.
So A2 and R2 will give u the same firgure, yes?
Is there a chart of some sort to match turbo size to engine capacity, or is it pretty much trial and error(I know I'd prolly need something like a TO-4/GT35/40 up and roughly .64/1.06 (Matched to a Mustang in the states, roughly same engine capacity), but, not ever being in2 turbos b4, if I have no idea what any of it means, so I can't make an educated decision on turbo choice if I decide to go that way....
