Are you after the factory offset or a good offset for big rims? My rims are 19x8.5 with 38+ offset, and in my opinion they are a perfect fit for VLs (if you don't mind doing work to the gaurds that is)

yeah that should be sweet. Dont go any wider than a 225 tyre on the front, as they will be getting pretty close to the suspension components As for the rear you will need to roll the gaurds and dont go any wider than 235 as it will scrape on the outer gaurd on big bumps How low is your car?
