hey guys, i have been doing up a slow project hg prem, at the moment it has a 253, which i might just wack a lumpy cam in for now and get it on the road... but down the track i will be wanting a better motor, i have been thinking of a fuel injected 5 litre maybe 355 stroker.. or 350-383 chev i had dreams alloy block chev, like ls1, or ls2 but cost gets up there quick, with all the conversion gear... the 5 litre fuel injected motor would be a lot easier of a conversion but maybe a 350 chev carby motor will be good enough, also as its an old car i am thinking of getting some chrome out the bonnet (tunnel ram), so a fuel injected motor wont really suit that idea any idea's will be much appreciated thanks

Keep it old and get yourself a 350 Chev. Simple and cheap. Nothing like the simplicity of a carby fed engine.

personally after owning a couple of carby cars (that werent even modified) i wont be going back in this life! EFI is just a world better. Instead of the cam, why not put efi on your 253 and drive it around happily and in the meantime build up a holden stroker then u can just drop that motor in and bolt up the eif running gear, easy. Or u could build the chev, muuuuch cheaper parts and you could even convert that to efi, just gotta buy a manifold with injection bosses and then youll need a throttle body and computer.. but of extra work but an injected 383 chev would be a mean animal and still smooth to drive

would i need to get a efi 350 chev engineered?? and wat sort of ecu would be best to run?? also with bolting the efi gear on the 253 (which had sorta crossed my mind), do u jsut bolt the 5 litre heads on, use the cam from the 5 litre and manifolds etc..?? thanks

You lose some compression as the heads are for 304 obviously which has slightly bigger bores.. but nothing dramatic. It would be a nice motor to drive around too, but more importantly itll setup the base and top end for whatever u wanna do next.

253 and 308 head r the same.. on carby motors... does the efi 5 litre heads have a different combustion chamber??

Its been a little while since i compared these heads side by side and from memory the combustion chambers are relatively the same. the exhaust ports are marginally bigger but the intake off the manifold is twice to 3 times the size. a stock vn head is like a ported carby engine head but better...its no wonder they flow so well. Ill always love the carby engines for there simplicity and will inevitably end up back with one on a really tough engine but for now im enjoying the injection.

i jsut meant compression wise would it really change between an old cast head and a newer efi head?? on a 253 thanks

Ive just purchased an EFI 5.0 and TH700 for my HQ coupe. I toyed with ideas of carbied 308s and 350's etc... but worked out that i would really like to enjoy the car and go on long drives with not bad fuel economy while still retaining some performance. My only option (and GREAT option) was the VN 5 litre motor and box. Now i have injection, heads that flow 500hp standard, tough exhaust note, and a 4 speed auto! Ill whack a cam in it for now, then later on I can stroke it, turbo it, supercharge it, build a tough NA motor! The possibilities with this motor are almost limitless and it is the best possible base for the money you'll pay for one.

can i ask where abouts you got urs.. i rang a few wreckers today..they wanted 3,600 for motor, loom, ecu and auto and more for manual but i prolly wouldnt buy from wreckers anyway get it from a forum cheaper

In my opinion it all depends on what you plan on doin with the car. If you are goin to be using the car for more than just a weekend hack/drag racing or something i reckon injected 5 litre would have to be pretty good. But if you wanna make serious power and run some numbers you cant go past a stroker small block chev. my theory anyway. PS:have you thought about a big block;cheap, easy, reliable power.

Big blocks are good. You dont need huge stalls or short diff gears, don't even need to rev them real hard!

i would have to get a big block engineered i think though, but i dont for a 350 cause hg's came out with 350's

There really is no replacement for displacement...but U gotta love the 5ltr. Easy to get parts for, parts are cheap providing you keep to a mild or warm application, and they do go well. I think we all need to put the big paw on our christmas list however.....

big block application will end up costing u tens of thousands, you will need to completely modify ur diff drive and tail shafts, front suspension find the right engine and box combination and get it enginered for any chance to register it. id suggest a 383 or 400ci sbc. cheaper and easier to register and u can still make good numbers out of these with the right goodies inside. forget the holden 5l. as the saying goes " classic not plastic " good luck with the build cant wait to see it finished.

some pics to show u how its going so far not showing engine bay or interior as they are just plain rude at the moment thanks for your replies guys.. am thinking of getting some efi heads, put them on the 253 for now with a different cam and jsut 4 barrel manifold with my 465 holley..then down the track either go full efi, or jsut up to 308 good bottom and tunnel ram on the efi heads maybe, if i can get a manifold to suit Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

from those pics it looks fairly straight, nice even gaps in the door jams. should be good
