Hey all, new to this forum, just thought id say hi, owned an r33 before, just bought a vl, love the rb engines Wondering, i am sanding my car back, it is currently a blue colour, and im wanting to spray it a different colour, am i able to sand till its not shiny then paint over? Or if i spray it a diff colour do i need to go all the way to bare metal? P.S. Is it better to primer the whole car? just to make it smoother? Thanks, hope these questions arent too stupid, new to the do it yourself car scene, first time ill be spraying a car. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

not that I know that much probaly just sand it back to the 1st coat it off and its nice and smooth and free from dirt rust ect if you sand it back to bare metal your going to have to go throught the whole priming etching process and its going to have to be perfect

You dont need to go back to bare metal if you dont want. It will look the best if you do. But sand it back completely till it feels about the same the hole way round the car, some bits will rub through more than others depending on dints etc. The car WILL need to be primered before being painted to give the paint something to stick too... I would advise getting someone to do it for you if you dont know what your doing.

Ok cool, few of my mates said dont need to primer as its already really smooth, can sum1 tell me the differences between primered and just sanding till no shine? Does it show up in the end?

just use an angle grinder with a steel paint stripping attachment and go over the whole car. it will be easier than sanding the paint. then just go over it with 200 grit by hand to smooth?

ok here ya go mate no 1 it depends on what kinda paint job ya want if you want a show job! get a painter to do it for you if its just a clean up that you want to prep rub it down with some 800 wet with water till there is no shine left all over then a nice rub wet with 1200 wet if you really want to be fussy.. no2: your car is blue so if you are painting it a dark colour blue, black, red ect you dint have to prime it if you dont want to ...BUT if you are painting it white, cream, a light metalic colour then i would prime it grey as it will cover over the blue better and wont bleed through........ no3 it also depends on type of paint grey primer is fine for acrylic but hi fill should be used if its going to be painted in 2pac or bascoat..... and to those of you who think paint will only stick to primer! what do you think primer is!!! a matt paint !!!! hope that helps mate
