Motorists will reportedly be offered up to $2,000 to convert their cars to LPG under a new federal government energy strategy.
Prime Minister John Howard's plan to target spiralling petrol prices will also offer grants for regional areas to take on solar power, The Australian newspaper reported.
"We are determined to explore all responsible measures to provide options for consumers facing high fuel prices while continuing to underpin medium- and longer-term energy security in Australia," Mr Howard said.
The government will offer car owners grants of up to $1,000 for new vehicles and $2,000 for existing vehicles to convert to running on LPG - a procedure that costs $2,500 to $4,000 for used cars, the paper said.
