The a9x was the homologation special of the bathurst model at the time. group C racing regulations required the race car to be based on the factory model.... this is like the group A walkinshaw as TWO89 stated. They came out with a basically standard 308..L34 heads, mild cam and backed by a 4spd manual. They can be made to go hard..a brilliant car in all respects and very light compared to most holdens. As a bit of Bathurst history The only things group c racing allowed you to change from factory was the cam, intake (carby) and exhaust...thus having the large valve L34 heads and rods as a factory item. From memory brocky ran dual webbers, obviously the cam was changed and the exhaust was 2.5" into 3" out the muffler..although the exhaust was shortened. They played with the exhaust to see at what length they got the most amount of HP. I know that engine punched out 400hp at, from memory, something like 4800rpm. This was a circuit profile engine though, a set up that works well once wound up and will keep going. not an 'off the line monster'. Im a great fan of the a9x. Always thought the road going versions looked great in the yellow and black. only 3 fully black ones made it out of the factory. In any case as a factory car they didnt go all that hard...fast for the time but not by todays standards. Even that golden 10second qtr mile time that was the golden bracket for so long is now pushing a 9 for street racers. Although with a good cam etc they will go hard..lets face it, its a 308! and if nothing else proves it brocky won bathurst like 8 times with that old carby fed engine!

Great engine...but i think id rather use a 308 and do it easier!...for those building triple carbied 6ers, at bathurst, when brocky won he ran tripple delorto's....not webbers and most would have you think

One of my old work buddies owns a road A9X genuine, the patterson cheney Race A9X, and recently bought himself an ex HDT L34. on cars alone spent close to $200,000. the road version has no radio in it lol. if anyone has been to the all holden days down here the road version is the absynthe yellow hatchback (anx ***) heres a pic of his hatchbacks. the race car is in the background heres the link to the pics http://www.carfreak.com.au/holdenday2003.htm Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

PHS: Two foor LJ torana's can be had for under 2 grand these days for a rough one and 5-8k for a nice example. A Genuine GTR XU1 in mint condition will go for 30k plus, and theyre hiking up! A mate of mine has one with a 186 and used to blow 5 litres away and the little 6 only really had a cam and ported head.
