Sounds like you have a short across one of your speaker wires running off your HU, check all you speaker connections for damage

If it's the standard one, maybe consider getting a slightly thicker one, (that's if it drops out when say the subs kick in). Getting a thicker wire to allow more current through usually works if you got a large setup. (Just make sure you build a fuse in there somewhere, so she doesn't surge on you) What setup are you running? But other than that, check the speaker wiring also. (as already mentioned)

Yeah mine has just started doing this to. I have 6" splits in the front and the little tweeter on the passenger side is starting to make a gay rattling sound. Only started doing it the other day (Because I put new door trims in, so I have to re-solder the wires to speakers). What could this be? Sh*t soldering lol The head deck is also cutting out, just the face. The music continues to play but the face goes blank for a few seconds then comes back to life. Jason.

When does it go out? Just when the bassy parts pump or? Could just be a HU problem, but if it's only with Volume, I reckon it has to be a power problem. Tweeter making a rattling sound? Not blown?

might sound stupid but this was happening to a mate's car, check your battery terminals coz if the voltage goin to the unit drops too much then it will cut out for a second or two. just check the terminals are tight and no corrosion and good solid wire connection.

i had a very similar problem, the face lights would dim when bass came through, turn it up and it just turned off. i ran new wires for power and earth straight to the battery. fixed it, never had a problem with it since. i dont think the original earth is quite strong enough.

hmm if its not strong enough why would it start happening after 4 months?

This Happened in my VL and I only just fixed it on the week end. VL wiring is ****, plain and simple. Although I run a rather large stereo, this is what I did to fix it. I ran a new earth from the battery to the body made out of 4 guage stereo wire. I left the factory earth from the block to the Battery but also added another 4 gauge stereo wire from the Block to the battery. ( You can never ahve to many earths in a VL.) I also used a Splitter block (Gold car audio one) and ran a 2 guage power wire from the positive to the splitter and ran all positives off of this. I also ran another NEW 8 guage wire from the Alternator to the Battery Terminal. I should also Add the fact that I use Gold Fitting through out and gold battery terminals. This fixed my problem. Or Your HU could just be stuffed. I also ran a new 16guage wire from the battery straight to the HU. and fused it at the front near the battery. As in a VL there is a Long path through small wires to get form the battery to HU. Then wired the Factory Permanant power wire to my turbo timer, so it to runs off a fuse... Good Luck

check the earth wire on ur antena. i know it sounds stupid but your headunit actually earths to your antena aswell. the earth for the antena is under ur passenger side guard. u will have to take off your mud gaurds under the wheel arch. follow the antenna up and you will notice that ther is a black wire coming from it this should be earther to the chassy on a spade clip on the inner side of the wheel arch. good luck

Sounds like a JVC headunit? Just put a slightly bigger power and earth wire to the headunit and go from there...

The reason this starts to happen after a period of time can be due to oxidisation of the standard inaddiquate earth... upgrade the earth and powerleads (make suer both are the same ga if not use a slightly bigger earth than power and it should be all good.
