I have an LSD for my R31 which is the stock cone type. I have heard this is the same type as in the VL. Is this true, and will it hold up to a bit of drag racing after a freshen up as long as I don't drive like a idiot doing burnouts all the time?
Seems the only other option is a locker (dodgy and ilegal) or a kazz (too expensive)

Dennis i have a VL turbo diff with a standard (i believe!) LSD in it. mine is one of the good few out there apparently, it is super tight and very predictable, i just love it. mind you i don't smash it doing burnouts and i have never done 5-6 passes on it in one night.

Cool. So its the same as a R31 LSD?

They are both Borg Warner 78 Series diffs so the LSD part will be the same.

doubt it man, mine's a 28 spliner whereas yours will probably be 25. is it a borg warner? i'm not even sure.
edit: well there you go.

Cool. So do many people with fast VL's perserver with this LSD, everyone on the R31 bags it out.
All R31 skylines scored 28 spline 4 pinion diffs.

So many VL's with different configurations its hard to say what the trend is.
Plenty of low quarter miles times have been run on stock diffs.
Minispools are popular to some.
Some people like the get the standard diff shimmed up ultra tight. (Plenty of info here on how that is done and results)
Whilst other people just go and get a heavy 9" Ford diff.
Whilst they aren't the best or tightest diff in the world (especially not after 20 years of abuse) there is really nothing overly wrong with them either, they are set up for a standard production car, it you want ultra tight LSD effect, look at the options above.

Just wondering if I would be wasting my time with it. I think I will try it out. Maybe get it tightened and fit 4.11's. All I want is some traction at the drags and on the street. ATM my car sometimes lights one rear tire up at 80-100km/h and its useless for are the drags. Its just a open wheeler I have a LSD sitting in the backyard for it. Some people tell me that they ware out VERY quick. But I suspect they are doing burnouts and other sick **** like drifting all the time. I only do that stuff when I accidentally break traction, I don't TRY to do it.
Do many people on here work on the diff themselves? I wouldn't mind learning how to do it myself.

Dennis, there is a big thread on fiddling with BW diffs over at PF.

14-07-06, 11:54 GMT+10#10 The way I see it, you have 2 choices:
a) replace it now before it breaks and save yourself time and effort down the track
OR
b) wait until it dies then upgrade it.
If you take option b), it may never die, or you may get a few years out of it before it does, or you can keep a look out for bargains in the mean time. Someone might have just bought a new kaaz centre, but no longer need it so be selling it NEW at below cost! Ok this might not happen but you can certainly buy some time to keep a lookout for things such as this.

14-07-06, 13:10 GMT+10#11 Do what I did. Check the tech article on LSD center.
My diff is going sweet. Shimmed LSD with redline oil and friction modifier. Always two wheels, line lockers, drags, drags with slicks, drifts, 100m fishys. But quiet when turning and behaves like it should on full lock etc, but when you what the two wheels it's there, instantly. Fully legal. It's awesome ;`)
