Well since my car is now no longer atmo, i think it can be upgraded to the forced section of the site.
I've had the car for about 4 years now and it went from being a stock auto executive to a supercharged manual with 131rwkw on standard management. Now it has undergone another set of changes with a much higher power goal in mind. I thought i'd do something a bit different this time around and have decided to twincharge the car using an Eaton M90 supercharger and a GT40 turbo. I went twin cam at the same time, just for kicks.
The car currently is being run in with just the turbo on, using an R33 skyline base map. It runs amazingly well, almost like a factory engine, and doesn't ping at all right up to redline. The injectors are maxing out at 5000rpm however. I have a set of 550cc Nismo items ready to go in.
It looks like this:
But has this under the bonnet:
Parts list:
3ltr block
ACL casties, standard bore size, ACL race series rings.
Rods - standard. Crack tested, cryo treated, beam polished then shot peened.
Bearings: Nissan mains, clevite 77 rods.
R32 GTR oil pump.
R33 RB25DE head
lightly ported exhaust side
fully rebuilt, new valve guides, reseated valves etc
stock cams
stock cam springs <--- probably not for long, we'll see.....
RB25DET 380cc injectors for now.
Custom JD plenum
XF throttle body (3 inch)
Hot side:
Stocky Racing Industries tubular, split pulse exhaust manifold
50mm HKS racegate with merge pipes from each collector.
Full house GT40 turbo. 1.34 exhaust A/R, split pulse. 0.72 A/R compressor. 4 inch inlet.
Stocky Racing Industries 3.5 inch dump pipe.
Stocky Racing Industries 3 inch cat-back mandrel bent exhaust.
Stocky Racing Industries 3 inch stainless cooler piping.
Eaton M90 supercharger, custom shortened drive snout for clearance. 1.8x crank speed drive.
Garrett 32mm wastegate setup as a bypass valve for the blower.
Hybrid front mount.
PowerFC.
Q45 AFM in the piping.
I built this whole engine myself (my first time) except for the head reconditioning. I assembled and checked all the clearances for the bottom end, which was a good learning experience i must say. I taught myself how to weld (stick welder pfff) and made two exhaust manifolds (didn't like the first one) and all the intercooler piping to save money. Being a cheapass student makes it interesting. It took me 2 years to get all the parts together! I certainly haven't wasted any money in making the car or the engine bay look nicer that's for sure. Function before form remember!
Currently the car has done 2000km on 10psi and is running beautifully. The turbo is not as laggy as you'd think it would be, i get 3psi by redline in 1st gear, and full juice at 4500 in 2nd, whereupon it breaks traction pretty well. It is quicker than an XR6 turbo to 100km/h which is nice.
The supercharger is in at the machinist's getting modified now, i hope to have the twincharge fully going and tuned by the end of the year. I will be requiring an R33 5spd gearbox before that time i suspect, the old MF5 won't like 300+rwkw.
Cheers,
Stocky
i'm getting 5psi out of the blower with no help (disconnected turbo) which is about right. as soon as it gets even a bit of positive pressure that will jump substantially, which will spool the turbo more, which will increase the pressure at the blower, which will spool the turbo more, which will increase the pressure at the blower........ you get the idea.
goes okay with just the blower - midrange and bottom end torque is much better. lacks that top end push though. soon to be fixed with a connecting pipe

nope. pictures to come tomorrow, i got my silicone elbow in the mail today. hooray for express post.
tomorrow i hopefully get to drive it for the first time with the blower and turbo connected, hoorah!
love the noise on the video of the blower, sounds a bit like a racing bike. Can't imagine how it will sound with the turbo hooked up. Congratulations on doing this all yourself and for being original. I wish I had the patience that you have mate. Good luck.
drove it today and yesterday - no belt dramas or anything! i keep blowing cooler hoses off on gearchanges though - think i need a plumback BOV to help stop the pressure spiking.
how does it go? well it's astoundingly weird. you can cruise around town at like 1200rpm in 4th gear, and never bother changing down if you want to go somewhere quick. the response is phenomenal, you can pretty much drive below 1500rpm all day every day, even going up hills in 5th gear at 70km/h is not a worry. the bottom-end torque is fantastic.
then you mash the pedal, and you've got full boost at 3000rpm (GT40, 1.34 rear remember!). it's got this massive powerband that goes from 2500 all the way out to redline, it seems to get even faster up above 4500, i think the twin cam head really starts working then.
for the first time, i can get full boost in 1st gear, not that it helps. it just destroys tires.
lol you guys should hear it - it's the strangest sounding engine in the world. the charger's gilmer drive whines a bit, then there's the growl of the blower over that, then when you put your foot down you can hear the turbo spooling up as well - crazy. changing gears on full boost is just odd, it's like there's a big monster under there that roars, a lot of the supercharger noise can still be heard out through the turbo and filter. it's impossible to describe the noise, but it's cool. certainly gets some funny looks from people!
anyway i've just gotta sort this issue of blowing pipe joiners off, then i need a boost controller and a tune. i don't think it's lost any of its top-end power which is good.
pics to come when rob gives me my goddam camera back.
hoorah rob gave me my camera back. pictures:
edit: autosalon haha, not a chance. i've spent so much time NOT making the car look like a flashy piece of cr@p that i would stick out like a sore thumb

Stocky that is a work of art mate no matter how ugly it might look.. Big congrats on havin the patience and time to do it all yourself.. well done and yeh gets some vids of this thing in action.
fark - drove the b@stard in the cold air tonight - i think it's actually gained top-end power from when it just had the turbo on there
it mashes first and 2nd, and it's still on the skyline base map with no tune. i've created a monster!
regarding kits - i have seriously considered it. but each one would have to be custom made to suit the car, and you would need to change turbo (to something bigger than what you currently have, no matter what you have now), custom low-mount manifold like mine, huge wastegate, custom blower snout, custom brackets, replicated drive system etc etc. the costs would be quite high.
even something like a 35/40 1.06 rear would be too small, you'd have full boost at like 2200 or something silly like that. the GT40 1.34 rear is just about right.
