ok guy does any one have any idea whats involed in doing this like what can you have and get away with ie. aftermarket ECU, BOV (cause iv heard if its a pre 1988 car it can have an aftermarket ECU and a BOV as long as its tuned right and the blow off isnt loud what about Boost controler ? bigger fuel pump ? injectors ? surge tank Bigger turbo ? oil catchcan ? intercoolers ? custom coldair intakes ? bigger TB ? say it put's out like 300RWKWS are they gonig to to want the suspension and brakes wheels and tyres to there standered ? has any one on here actually have a enginering cert for there VLT ? if so could you please list mods and a photo of engine bay if any one has any idea about prices to get the cert would be good if any one knows of any one that does them for vl's that would be good and the process like the guy give you the cert then what it go's to the EPA to get tested for emissions ? i really want to do this cause i wont have to worrie about doing mods and getting defected so if any one's got input that would be sweet thanks

From wat i've read in other threads matey there doesn't seem to be any list of mods you can or can't do. VicRoads say 1 thing, police say another. If anyone knows bout getting a Enginering Cert let me know 2.

PHS - Because you are modding the engine, the car will have to go threw epa testing to gain the certificate. To cut it short, epa testing isnt cheap and if you fail you dont get your money back... shaun

dont i need a engeinering cert first then i go to the EPA to get the test's done and im pritty sure the prices have droped for testing like 400-600 bucks that's why im asking about what they will and will not accept like cause its an older car i think i can have a aftermarket ECU and cause VL have STD BOVs i think you can have one as long as its not loud like i ned to know if they'll accept catch cans will the enginer want the brakes upgraded cause it s alot faster now? i can take it to a tuner and get them to tune it to be EPA safe then just get it changed back later im sure some one on this site has had it done ? please i would really like to know how to go about it from some one thats done it already

ummm.. after you get the engeinering cert you have to take your car to the EPA to go over the whole thing and make sure it's all to scratch with the regulations of the EPA Victoria

A blow off valve wont be passed as the air isnt passing through the mufflers, it is not 'filtered'. A plumb back BOV can be done. (Plumbed back into the exhaust)

(Plumbed back into the exhaust) What the????? Mate, if you're plumbing a BOV back into the exhaust, you've got some serious issues! I spoke to a local engineer about 12 months ago and this was his response... Hi Brad, I am sorry but your car cannot be signed off because of the engine modifications. Originally it had to meet an ADR requirement for emissions, and now that has been altered, so the only way you can prove continuing compliance is with an emissions test that will cost several thousand dollars. It is also likely that you will not pass the test. Unfortunately there is no way out of this for you, there are really ever only 3 options. do a complete engine swap, not modify the existing engine get an emissions test done dont recommend it and very expensive. run straight LPG not an option for vehicles originally designed to run on unleaded fuel, its only an option for earlier leaded cars. EPA will be happy as long as you meet ADR emission requirements, which you cannot prove you meet know because of the extensive engine mods. Regards, Ben Wight Bisitecniks Pty. Ltd.

monstaS4 + Morgz now what mod's in specific where they talking about ? like i have a custom plenum, XF T/B, cooler, bigger injectors, std turbo, custom air intake, EMS ECU, catch can, BOV -but dont care about it- (isnt the stock relife vl turbo valve vent st8 to the atmosphere?) will i get knocked back ? now last i heard about a year ago the prices for testing had droped heaps like to $600 whats the process? does the engineer sign the Mods that have been done so there deemed as safe then you need to get the testing done (pass them) then the EPA Victoria look at it correct ? like i can get some one to tune the ecu so the emissions are ok but what about the catch can ? and if the emissions are ok why would they care about the XF t/b custom plenum injectors cooler so on so fourth ? as long as there safe

Well mine is a twin cam conversion, which in itself is fine. But the programable ECU is the issue. Even if you paid the coin for an emissions test and it passed, there is nothing stopping you from adding some more fuel after the test, thereby increasing emissions. The ECU would have to be lockable so the program cannot be altered after the test. The stock relief valve is purely a safety device, and is never open unless there is a problem with boost control, as opposed to a BOV which is in operation every time you have vacuum. Catch can would have to be 100% plumbback (i.e. no filter to atmosphere) to have a chance at passing. My understanding of the process is that the engineer must certify that any modifications meet the current Australian Design Rules. ADR 37/01 is the key rule which outlines maximum emissions levels. This is set to tighten to euro standards in the next few years i believe. I'd doubt the EPA would need to look at it, because the testing facility at the manufacturing plants would be EPA approved, and as far a plumbing goes, the engineer knows what is legal and what is not.

cheere's MonstaS4 my mate bought a dato with a motec and it was all engineered no worries im pritty sure if its a pre 88' model car u can use aftermarked ECU cause the ECU they used back then were pritty ****ty and probly not up to scratch with the current EPA anyways like compare a Brand new BMW emissions to a VLT's does any one els have any info about after market ECU's on VLT ? MonstaS4 did he tell you the ECU was a BIG NO NO and there was no way to get one engineered or just that it would be harder ? like if i have to spend 2g's and get it done for my car its worth it cause i wont have to worrie about getting done eva it would just be good to know from a VLT owner thats had it done what im up against and im sure out off all the VLT's there would have to be a few getting around with engineering cert. for ECU Plenum so on so fourth if any one's got info that would be sweet cheer's

correct me if im wrong but a datto probably comes under the same rules as a HQ where it never had any polution gear on it but by the time you got to the HX it had polution gear on it and thats why when i went to find a car to put my stroker in it had to be a HQ and not a HX or HZ or commo etc. I would talk to anthony rodregus at maz tec in thornbry about the can's and cant's of aftermarket ecu's. But as for an engineers cert the computer has nothing to do with it. you would need to go to macleod to the epa for a test and see if you car passes if it dosnt they wont put your car off the road. but if u had been epa'd by a sniffer or a pig then they will put your car off the road if it dosnt pass. your BOV WILL NOT PASS. your plennum probably not either unless it has all the emissions **** on it which i highly dbout and you can have I intake mod ie a poddy or a cooler. WHY BOTHER ANYWAY? JUST MAKE YOUR CAR SO FAST THAT THEY CANT CATCH YOU. buy a daily driver and sport the beast on the weekend or in the cover of darkness and minimul traffic to make for an easy get away By the way when my bt1 is finished ill pm ya and we will go for a cruise The EPA sucks anyway FU@K EM Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Monsta's post matches the closest with my enquiries, but remember a new set of guidelines came out pretty recently so I believe things may have changed. Vehicle engineering is a complex subject with a lot of variables, ever changing rules, different interpretations, different rules in each state etc etc. I personally would not trust any answer I received on the internet unless I knew the person was actually a current engineering signatory. I reckon at least 90% of the 'engineering' answers posted on forums is total and utter bull. If you really want to know, go and see a signatory.

^^^^^^^^^im guessing when the bov go's off instead on venting directly into the atmospheare it get's routed back into the exhaust so it can go throught the cat ect. ect. so it's legal Browny i get what your saying but what im trying to do is find some one here with a cert. that can tell me in there first hand knowlage on the subject???????? and i dont mind hearing other people's opinions too UTRYIT yeh i see what ya saying but its been four years now of haveing to worrie about driveing every where cause of police and haveing the car off the road for a while and the cash to change it back and forth iv just had enough i want to drive and stick it right up the police with some fat documents that STATES: THE CAR IS FAST, HIGHLY MOD'ED AND LEGAL HAVE A NICE DAY MR. OFFERCER maybe add my index finger too so your from the east side too hey cool yeh when eva you get your car done let me know and we'll roll you probly have seen me round here's a link too my ride. http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=73317
