Stanvac Speedway Push
State motorsport associations have thrown their support behind a Reynella man's idea to turn the mothballed Port Stanvac Oil Refinery site into a motorsport park.
Graham Van der Hoek has written to Southern Suburbs Minister John Hill and Environment Minister Gail Gago with his idea, that has the backing of Federal Kingston (Lib) MP Kym Richardson.
Adelaide's only motorsport track is north of the city, at Mallala.
Mr Van der Hoek says the 240ha Stanvac site could become a motorsport mecca with several different tracks catering for all styles of motor racing.
He said there would be room for a 5km V8 supercar track, a drag strip, speedway and motorcross circuit, go-kart track and off-road buggy and rally circuit.
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS), the governing body for four-wheel motorsport including circuit racing, off-roading and rallying, welcomed the idea along with other associations such as Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) and Australian Independant Dirt Kart Association.
CAMS SA state manager Adam Williss said "we would certainly support any sort of motorsport park".
"Certainly south of Adelaide there's a bit of a void," Mr Williss said.
Rob Sharp, of ANDRA, said the closure of Adelaide International Raceway, at Virginia, meant there no longer was a drag strip in Adelaide.
"In Tasmania, they have three viable drag strips," he said. "That is in a state the percentage of the size of South Australia"
Mr Van der Hoek said the south was in desperate need of a motorsport park. Mr Van der Hoek said the site would still need to be remediated to industrial standard - as previously agreed to by Mobil and the State Government.
Mobil spokesman Alan Bailey said the company did not have any immediate plans to sell the site and would wait until it made a decision on whether it would restart the refinery, mothball it for another three years or close it permantly.
it would be good if it goes ahead .

Study on this site has already been undertaken here in SA by numerous parties interested in doing this very thing.
The suggestion is merely that.....a suggestion.
Factors such as noise, traffic, and the major factor that the primo water front property that the oil refinery is located on has unsurpassed sweeping views of the Glenelg to Outer harbour coast line would put land value through the roof.
Dodgy soil or not....land with a view in Adelaide is at an all time low, with prices going through the roof, you will find that even if Mobil sell the site, it will take a long time to make the area suitable liveable yet alone saleable.
I hedge my bets that a big development company like Delfin could not only out muscle, but out bid any other party for this very desirable land site.
Bottom line - inner metro motorsport facilities are now a thing of the past. Anything new in Adelaide will be at least 1 - 2 hours drive. Maybe that plan for a track out by Murray Bridge is the one we should be taking about?
