My brother and I are having problems trying to locate an oil leak from the front of his engine. We first thought that it was coming from the seal between the sump and the block but when we cleaned it and looked again it appears to be coming from higher up. we had this problem a few weeks ago and when you turned the car off it would drop a fair amount of oil onto the ground, but it went away for a while and has come back now. If anyone could give us an insight as to where to oil might be coming from? we really need to fix this problem before it leads to other issues! thanks in advance!

could be the cam seal...leaking from the top and travelling down inside the timing cover and dropping out the bottom

If you remove the upper timing cover you will be able to see if its running down from the camshaft seal. If its clean, then it will more then likely be the oil pump crank seal, its behind the timing belt sprocket on the crankshaft. Both of these seals are the same part no. (about $5 from repco or $15 genuine from Nissan)

Could be rocker cover gasket. Piece of piss to change if it is. Just a question to consider... Is your timing belt due for a change? Because if it is or you aren't sure and your motor has done alot of K's may as well do it and the cam/crank seals at the same time.

as mentioned check both cam and crank seals. Easy to do man. If your car's done close to 100,000 or 200,000 kms then yeah u might have to do what stokowagn suggested and do the whole lot. Let us know how you go.
