Advice required, I am considering a Garrett GT35R and am wondering about the choice of turbine housings(.63/.82/1.06) I will be using it on my RB30ET 240Z...i currently am running a std T3....i don't particularly want to modify the engine(head, cam, forged pistons, etc) I do have an aftermarket engine management system, intercooler, extra injectors,2 1/2" mandrel exhaust, bosch 044 fuel pump,RR malpassi fuel regulator i do not want to lose any low rev torque or sacrifice any spool time and so my question is which turbine housing would suit me best??? 95% of my driving is sedate street use changing gears below 3500rpm 5% of my driving will see up to 6500rpm i would rather feel a push in the back for the 95% and sacrifice a little top end for the other 5% ...........oh and just to complicate things a little.....would i be better with a GT30R OR the XR6 garrett with the advantage of internal wastegate?? thanks in advance paul

go internal gate, ull feel ur spool and its legal

thanks for the info guys anyone tell me what would be the downside of running a .63 turbine housing? i am not after big horsepower rather torque lower down in the rev range.....not sure i would be able to put more than 300 hp to the ground on the street (1050kg,215x15" tyres)anyway? BTW i don't think it is illegal to run an external wastegate in WA,so i could run a 40mm+ wg with the .63 if i needed to vent excess exhaust gasses

.63 is too small if you dont want that much power look at a smaller turbo.

so what effect would that have on the performance of the engine(spool up revs,HP,surge?etc) cheers

well its just a mis-match. the gt35r with .63 rear suits 4 cyl engines that want extreme hp at the total expense of lower rev range power. there is more to it than just banging a small rear housing on to make it spool earlier. if you want the low rpm powerband you need a compressor that flows more air down low. the gt35r compressor does not flow more down low,its just not designed for that. have a look at the gt3037. ps dont pay that price for it though http://www.horsepowerinabox.com/HPIAB2/prod18.htm Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

thanks guys, i'm convinced the GT35 is probably on the large size for what i'm after......now who does good prices on the GT30 with the internally gated .63 housing, what boost can i expect with the internal gate and will it spool up any earlier than my stock T3 thanks again oh and anyone know of any secondhandies for sale??

Volumetric efficiency will go to the shitter with 0.63 on the GT35 turbo. You will have a compressor that can get plenty of air into the engine, but it can't get out because of the restrictive hot side in comparison to the inlet side. You will end up needing higher octane fuel or reduce timing to the degree of losing mass power. Look for a turbo that is a little smaller, that way the complete rotating assembly will be lighter and help spool without resorting to making the housings very small or restrictive. Either way if you want a wide torque/power band on the RB30ET your pushing an uphill battle in my opinion. If you went with one of the Nissan dohc 24valve heads you not only get a way more efficient head but you can increase static compression ratio and make the engine way more efficient and torqey in comparison to the ET. Until you drive a DOHC RB30 you won't believe the difference in torque.

GT35 is too big for a street car. I've got a DOHC RB30 with a GT3040, 0.82 rear. Finially wound the boost up a little (a huge 14psi!) and dynoed it at the weekend.......made 260rwkw on 14psi. Torque is somewhere around 800Nm. I'm still waiting on the dyno sheet to be emailed through, so i'm not sure what rpm this occured at.

Whats that setup go like on the street above with the 30/40? Any lag? Is that the biggest turbo you could go without making it crap to drive you reckon? Or nothing to really compare it too?

man a rb30det with gt3540 is totally streetable. its a match made in heaven Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yep, seen and raced MR VLT, VLCT 25 headed RB30 with cams and a 0.82 35/40, that thing has the biggest power band and comes on like a motherfu**er!

I know 800Nm sounds alot, but thats what the dyno display was showing. I dunno?? So 260rwkw is not "decent power" for an every day driven VL?? A GT30 is good for nearly 300rwkw and will obviously spool earlier than a GT35 so how can a GT35 be ideal? Unless of course you want 300+ at the bags.

at what revs does yours start to pull monsta?

If you are asking me personally, no it feels slow, i just drove my car on low boost 16psi(315rwkw auto) and it felt like everything is in slow motion. i drive it everywhere with 378rwkw now, it hooks up perfectly with a bit of throttle correction and tyres let down...But it is what you are used to i guess, low boost was scary for a few weeks., now i want more..same old story 800nm is crazy,That well over 11,000N it must have 4.11's and be dynoed in a lower gear, even then it is totally outragous. Personally you have to push Gt30's so much harder on a RB30, the 3540's do it easy. The 3040's are a good tuff street Rb25 turbo. But i personally think this guy wants a lot less than that. cheers darren
