Alright, first up, I'm going to be honest, I don't know a whole lot. But I learn pretty quick (I ask a ****load of questions, lol.)
So here come all my questions (prepare yourself!):
1. My plan is to put the RB26DETT head on the RB30E block. Does it make a difference if it's an RB30ET or an RB30E that I use originally?
2. The other part of the plan is to use the VL as the car at the start, because it has most things I need for the conversion (Compared to the VK). But I really don't like the look of the front of the car. So the next question is, is it possible to use the front end panels from the VK on the front end of the VL? I have been told this is simple, and they fit right on.
3. How much work is involved in this exactly? (Time is no issue, nor is money really (have 2-3 years to build it)) I just want to get an idea of how much money I'm looking at here.
4. Would it be better to use the VLT as a 'base', or the VL? I heard the VLT has bigger brakes, and different suspension, but as these things will be upgraded anyway, is it worth spending the extra money at the start on the VLT?
5. I take it with a conversion to an engine like this, I will need a much more heavy duty clutch, is this correct?
6. Also, will a new ECU and Diff be necessary? (I'm almost certain the ECU will be, but not sure if the diff will)
OK, so as much as anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. This is not a dream, it is a goal. A very achievable one, so don't take me as a dreamer. There may be more questions afterwards (As I said, I don't know a whole lot about this).
*nods*
SEARCH!
1. No. Use a Series 2 NA block- easy life, with all the fittings you need for a turbo.
2. You're joking right? Is your taste in your as5? Ban this guy
3. A fair bit but there is plenty of info do a search on the net
4. VLT has the diff you need and gbox. Brakes should be upgraded from there anyway along with suspension
5.Get a better clutch
6. get a better ecu
I have searched a lot, and have read quite a bit, but I decided to come and get some other advice from people that I can actually ask questions. I would prefer it if you didn't jump on my taste, and generally be an ass towards me. Thank you a lot for the help you gave though, I appreciate that.
Ok..
Work out your budget.. then double it, thats what it will cost!
Basically your talkin pretty big power too, other wise why would you do this conversion in the first place when a RB30 will make 300rwkw on stock internals and most of the time with pump fuel with the right add ons.
Brakes will be binned so doesn't matter, gearbox and clutch will mostly be sold too so doesn't matter, diff will need rebuilding, might as well use forged pistons and rods and balance the crank, do it all properly.
The head stock would be suffienct for street use standard..
You need to decide what turbo setup, mid range single GT35? large GT42 or a set of twin T28s or something..
what are you using the car for?
and yep new computer is essential! probably injectors too.
In my honest opinion you need around $20k to do this half decently.. maybe more.. it's not cheap but the results are unbeleivable if done correctly, you need a good mechanic helping and one whos been there and done it before, too much money to stuff anything up or redo dodgy work.
My advice is take your time.. plan it, then spend your money once! there wont be any cheap ways of doing things with an engine with this capability that wont come back to bite you..
btw thats an extremely quick run down of what your in for.. there is a lot more to it than whats mentioned..
Thanks for that, that's a very nice explanation of the sorts of things I need done. I was hoping to keep the budget at about 15k, but if it goes over, it goes over. Doesn't have to be done at any set time.
On the turbos topic, I'd like a mid-range twin setup. Car's only going to be for street - do you think I'm going too far over the top?

Just for street use, personally I'd say it's over kill as as suitably modified RB30 will do the same thing.. you spend $15k just on a RB30 you can go pretty darn quick..
honestly if your keen on the twin cam idea for a streeter, just use a stock RB26DETT and with a nice twin 3" exhaust, aftermarket steel wheels in the turbos, hybrid cooler, some plug in management and around 15psi, with a 5 speed it would be an awesome car to drive.. and would probably be done for under 10k.
Calaisrida did this conversion and it's an awesome streeter.
Agreed. Its not as torquey but will get the numbers and be nice original motor. Once you *******ise it by combining the 30 with the 26, you run into many, many other issues and people also expect big numbers from your car.
Morgo has the right idea about street use, but mine sounds awesome so I love it!
just completed this .. pulls like a bloody freight train even on 10psi. Raced a few cars on street, wrx gen3's and chopped them good. The thing u will find when doing ersearch is that EVERYONE follows the leader. My build was cheaper and i went a totally differnet way when it came to internalls and compression.
Cheers justin
