Beware of distributors that have been pulled apart and had the gear put back on the shaft 180 deg. out [my mate just got caught with this one!] Because there is an odd number [13] of teeth on the gear, the timing will be half a tooth out and there is insufficient adjustment on the sector to ever be able to get it right. You will end up too advanced and can't retard enough, or if you move the dizzy one tooth retarded, will end up too retarded and can't advance enough. Same problem as if your cam is one tooth out, as one cam tooth = about half a dizzy tooth. It's easy to check. With the dot on the gear lined up with the larger notch in the housing, the rotor should be pointing to No 1 on the cap.

might be a tooth out, check your timing with a timing light!

This is a quick way well sometimes it is... 1) take the #1 or #6 spark plug out ( easier to work with #1) 2) place a screw driver in the cylinder a long one 3) with a socket and ractchet turn the harmonic balancer to TDC ( Top Dead Centre) or until the screw driver is at the top so it cant go anymore 4) Adjust dizzy so rotor button is facing the #1 cylinder It might take a bit of playin with the dizzy but you'll eventually get it spot on just make sure when you got to re-adjust the dizzy make sure the #1 cylinder is at TDC goodluck!

Wait for the timing light....Its sluggish because its well Retarded. If you keep driving it, your exhaust manifold will be glowing in no time....

you really should mark stuff when u pull it out especially if you cant fix it if something goes wrong. your car will run right????? if so put it on TDC then look where your HT lead goes into the cap and the rotor should be just before it. if its not running and its at TDC firing on no. 1 then you probly have it 180deg out

it ended up being one tooth out witch i tried fixing plenty of times cos i was pretty sure thats what the problem was but a mech came round and fixed it in 5 mins he just took it out and moved it a bit and it all ran sweet.

I'm having a similiar problem as you except my car runs smooth up until 2500-3000rpm and then it runs out of puff. I've done cam/ignition timing numerous times with no success, so leads me to believe that somethings going on with the dizzy. My engine retards as it's revved. So, from what your saying. Even if the cam/ignition timing is okay and if the dizzy is out or whatever it will run like poo?
