hey all... Got a drama I just cant put my finger on, and I just dont have the time to go changing the usual CAS, AFM, Dizzy cap ect. 1. Car is blowing smoke. No smoke on startup or idle. It only blows smoke under boost and is leaving a residue on my bumper/tailight area. It has been doing this scince I've owned it. (havent had a chance to really find the issue.) Now tonight it has developed a new problem, when i start to come on boost, it hesitates/surges, then takes off fine..... feels like it sort of misses for 1 or two seconds.... PIC: You can see the black crap on theexhaust side of the car. My first thought is fuel problem. I have new pumps so I've ruled those out for the time being. I do however have a malpassi, which im suspecting to maybe have a hole in the diamfram, as it has a oily residue around it. Secondly I noticed what maybe a leak between the runners and the plenum, as it just looks a bit suspect in a certain spot. im using the car as a daily at the moment, and while it is like this i am not taking it over 3 grand till i get the time to look at it. Educated replies would be great. Mick PS: Car has a brand new Turbo - not leaking No blow by - coole pipes/ throttle body is clean as. Running basically stock, hi boost at 13psi, malpassi, new pumps, new plugs/leads. Engine rebuilt about 20k ago. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

when the motor is running, spray some carbie cleener or sopey water on the plenum and see if it suckes in, carbie cleener will sorta pick up the revs. but your mixture sounds rich, too much fuel, could be the afm, have a quick multi meter test....if you dont have a multi meter than get one its a must for vl dignostics and with out it your only guessing....there like $15 for a cheep one. also your miss sounds like a fouled plug because of the over fueling. and its not the fuel pressure reg or the pump bacause u have the pressure just not the tell me when to inject and how much type of thing. or your timing could be out

Ok checked AFM today and was fine. Checked plugs theyre fine too. Going to check timing later today.

dude that black smoke could just be carbon, like its running very rich under boost which is better than leaning out..

is it using more petrol than needed ie noticable? if not dont worry

Your Injectors could be Internalily leaking Or not pulsating right,As said check ECU errors.

The coolent temp sensor was giving a false reading so i just replaced it with a brand new one and yeah everything was gone. now i got a damm boost leak so i am in safe mode again...

thanks for the replies guys, appreciate it. OK, Ive checked all contacts that I know of, and so far no good. Timing is spot on. Plugs are good (little bit blackish, but Id say due to the bad mixture - cleaned) checked gaps. I thought the o2 sensor only came into effect at cruising speeds? Wheras Im only blowing smoke/ running like crap on boost. Ill check the coolant sensor tomorrow morning. Scince last night the car has developed a slight miss every now and then...

haha good news ,....I wish.. The missus yesterday came to me saying she had a coolant leak in her 1991 Holden Nova (read corolla) and she cooked the hell out of it.... So upon buying rediculously over priced radiator hoses and new heater hoses I fitted them. Then thought scince the VL is running like crap I'd take her car. Half way home the thing is overheating to the max so I turn it off and roll home (end of massive hill) once I slowed down i realised the engine was running still... So yeah car decided to deisel itself for a while, and I couldnt stop it lol. Even when i tried to stall it the goddamn thing would just start up again!!! Anyway long story short spent the entire day pulling off her intake manifold/carby just so i could get to the one goddamn hose that I forgot. Damn East west engines. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

You suspect the malpassi could be a problem, so i'd put a fuel pressure guage on it.....could be too much pressure, hence the extra fuel and smoke.

my money is on the coolant sensor/plug. had the same thing, real hesistant and then it would come good.
